Here's the answer to what a slug is in this reference.
I'm from Mississippi.
This is a local name for a burger.
It originally was a slug burger. Than we cut it down to just a slug.

Origin of the name slugburger.
Was a burger a guy named john weeks came from chicago to Mississippi in 1917. He began selling the burger he called the weeks burger for a nickel which was called a slug. So it became known as a slug burger because it was so cheap
