Rip bullets, can I get into legal trouble for the type of ammunition I use in a self defense situation?

Rip bullets, rip is short for radically invasive projectile and for the people that don't know, when these bullets reach their target, the fragments spread in different directions making it harder for the target to survive (might kill them instantly) so my question is I can buy them online and have them shipped to my address, does that mean I can use them without getting in trouble if I can just easily buy them, if anything I might get them for home defense and use hollow tips for carrying.

Yes, they are perfectly legal in the United States. They are conceptually the same as any other defense ammunition round (like Federal Hydrashoks, SigSauer V-Crown, Hornady Critical Duty or Critical Defense). As another commenter pointed out, they function the same as frangibles. Yes, they can do a lot of damage inside a person shot with them - that's what they are intended to do, inflict maximum damage quickly and stop an attacker. However many organs they may damage is moot in a use of force situation (provided such use is justified).

Well it goes in different directions, it's like a bullet with smaller bullets and I think it still has a main projectile as well which is bigger than the others but I don't know tbh lol

I would assume it makes it extremely lethal co sidering it can pierce several organs with one round

Sounds to me like the same as frangible bullets (like Glaser safety slugs). They are actually recommended for defense use indoors to reduce overpenetration and ricochet potential. The bullet shatters and goes every which way, which sounds a lot like the "rip" bullets you're describing. Air Marshals carry them in case they have to shoot aboard a flying aircraft so they won't penetrate the aircraft skin and cause all kinds of problems. They're freakin expensive though. All things considered, I'd rather use a shotgun for home defense.

I guess I don't know, the designs are different, the other is a bullet that breaks into fragments right? This is a projectile that have many sharpened fragments for more penetration I think but I don't know, I'm not an expert on ammunition, I have a shotgun but my handgun is what I have at reach most of the time

to keep it simple... (in Texas) any ammunition that can pierce armor/metal used with handguns is, illegal

and the reason is that handguns with this kind of ammo, will be a threat to law enforcement and the military

also... Federal legislation also applies inside any state, so you have to be aware of those

and then, there is the courts... even if the ammo and guns are legal, and even if you're defending yourself at your home... a court could still decide that you used them illegally, for example with the intention to kill

if you start shit with a neighbor at your property and you get slapped by them, therefore you blow up half their body with a concealed gun and overpowering ammo, you could very possibly get in trouble at the court, lol

Well that's not the proper way to handle the situation, shooting a neighbor for an argument would lose in court no matter the ammunition type because it wasn't the proper way of handling the situation, in my state you have to try and invade the situation if the person isn't armed and if they follow you, you have the rights to stand your ground with lethal force (Florida), and Florida has castle law which means for home invasion you have the rights to use lethal force, the intention to kill won't matter if it's a home invasion

yes, I get that...

but still... certain ammo is intended to destroy metal/body armor, not to be used against people

and also, the idea of self-defense is to stop a threat... not to blow them up from the inside towards the outside in all possible directions

also, you should be careful about possession... because one thing is to legally possess these things, anything... and another thing is acquiring these things towards shady methods

I found the answer it says it was debated in the past but the US government never did the push to pass the law to prohibit or outlaw this type of ammunition in my state, thanks for your time tho
