Are your surprised when some Mexicans immigrants learn English?

My male friend got fired (rightfully) last year for discrimination. He was mocking a Mexican lady with someone else and saying specific terms.

He assumed she was another Mexican that lived in the US for years and can't speak any English. The lady has only been a legal resident for 4 years so he really thought she didn't understand anything.

He had a surprised pikachu face when she reported him, had secretly recorded it and proceeded to do it in English without any translator. He got fired quickly. Are you surprised when some Mexicans immigrants catch up and actually learn English?

The lady has been learning English since the day she came to here. She feels more comfortable speaking Spanish but will speak English when it's needed and is at an ok level without needing translators. My friend literally had a surprised pikachu face.

I'm surprised that anyone would move to a country without learning the main native language before crossing the border. It's one thing if you vacation in a country and don't know the language, but if you intend to live somewhere you really should be somewhat proficient in their language before you settle there. The fact that you act like people are shocked when Mexicans learn English is ass backwards. It's more like being shocked it took 4 years of them living in the country to realize that they should really learn the language.

NO and talk about earned Respect. The Ronald Reagan and George Bush Sr "fence jumpers"... the 25.00 a cut, blow, gutter lawn guys... Their kids and grand kids are now the plumbers, electricians, and heating/air guys make $100.00-200.00 hours on a $7,500 full heat/air replacement.

WHILE spoiled white kids sit at home getting fat in their Momma's basement Gaming or going to University, partying, and graduating into Trader Joe's career.

No I'm not surprised when your moving to a country you should make an effort to learn or at least understand the native and predominate language of the country. Otherwise your gonna have a hard time living there due to not being able to communicate with anyone or understand what's going on.

It's just common sense.

I'm not surprised. I am surprised when they drop their children off in Kindergarten not knowing a single word of English.

Not really, also if they're legal then they probably already know English, it's the pidgin language and is the most widely spoken second language.

They are/were known to be the most stubborn immigrants when it comes to refusing to learn English.

@asker they come from third world countries where escaping poverty and violence are their only priorities. Their life goals are simple to live in peace and for their children to have a better life not to learn English.
