Comes from his famous play Romeo and Juliet.
Well, then he should have changed his name every time he wrote a different play.
Any other name and he would have been still, a proficient writer/poet.
True visual appearances mean nothing, as much as our functions and gifts, but he could call a rose sweet and a daisy sweet, but the two would undoubtedly never smell or look and grow the same.
Everything a rose is becomes associated with that arrangement of letters.
I personally like it for its arrangement and combination of hard and soft consonants, with its set of vowels.
I do believe Shakespeare was saying calling a rose anything other, would still smell just as sweet. He is “youthful” and very passionate in his questions, but his gratitude for a rose is not *logical* because science declares we work against *disorder,* and one of the ways to do that is to IDENTIFY the things we see in this world.
Even Shakespeare needed words of identification, in order to identify his emotions, events, and people- like love, hate, agony, and tragedy. Romeo. Juliet.
When you identify something remarkably superb, it becomes significant.
Shakespeare wasn’t scientifically adept, but he was superbly poetic, and his identity of a name is what helped many to (re-) locate his work- under the name of true significance, and now severe reminiscence by humanity.
Even the judean texts show Adam and Eve were given the ability to take dominion and cultivate, and to keep order in the garden.
They named the plants and animals.
What’s in a name?
Only what it means to the one naming it.
I guess yes, the interactions and the functions, and traits of an object or person, is much more important than a name, but without it
the world would be lost in disorder, and we would be entrapped in a place where we could not freely express ourselves (as Shakespeare did so well), and share what was experienced, with
others, unless they directly experienced it themselves and in a likewise manner.
What’s in a name? It can mean nothing to the one uneducated/unknowledgeable and who doesn’t read, and without the two, furthermore, the one who never seen a rose, or other item.
OR
It can mean the world ✨
to those who identify it, the others who recall it and study it, and all who experience it.
That is of course my take 😌👐
(Slightly biased, as I also do love the rose above my love, for all other flowers. Nonetheless, everything I say stands and remains logical in my perspective).

I agree with it, roses would still smell the same even if they weren't called roses.
I like it BUT names are important and words matter and what we call things and how we use names matters.
