How do you keep a dog from jumping on you and barking all the time (in a humane way)?

My sister brought her dogs here because she's staying in a motel due to being homeless. One of her dogs is a pit bull. He is friendly, but loves to jump on me and my housemate. His toenails are so sharp they are causing scars and cuts on our arms. He also barks all the damn time like nonstop. How can we calm him down? It's getting to the point I can't even think in silence anymore.

You have to be consistently strict, otherwise the dog will just check who he can walk over. If he is jumping on you, you say loudly no and push him back. If you need to escalate, turn him off onto his back. If he is barking loudly, put a muzzle on him for a few minutes. Dogs learn very quickly, IF you are consistent. I „tamed“ one in ten minutes, with similar dominating behavior (weak female owner).

You have to be consistent, ignore the dog until it’s calm. Also look into trimming the nails. With my dog I put my knee up; I actually wasn’t doing it to train him to stop jumping we’d been working on 4 paws on the ground and I got stung by a wasp so I lifted my knee to rub it and he hit full force and winded himself never jumped up again.


He was also trained to redirect so if he’s jumping up he holds onto the bannister of the deck instead and gets a side cuddle.


For that dog if he knows sit and stay work on that, have him sit and stay until you’re ready to greet him. And then maybe teach him down or paws on the ground. Find what’s high value to him be that a treat or a toy and keep them by the door when you come in if he does the correct behaviour reward if he doesn’t I’ve always done a 3 second neutral response then ask for the proper behaviour again.

Your sister ruined that dog by not training it when it was a puppy.


Training an adult dog is way more difficult.


I knew one dog like that, my sister’s pit.


When I told her the dog needed to be retrained, she cursed me out.


A week later, her dog bit a toddler on the face and tore the flesh off of a woman’s forearm revealing the bones.


The dog was immediately put down.


Training is extremely important.

It's sad that it's not the dog's fault, my suggestion is training, get the dog whisper.
