Anyone elses cat do this?

Question

My cat is an old little jerk now. Had her since she was a kitten. And I swear she has never drunk from her water dish unless she was gonna die without water. The minute I go into a room in the sink and look she's there wanting me to turn it on for her to drink out of. She hates drinking water from a dish. It has to be dripping from the water facet for her to want it. And I've had cats before and none have ever done this besides her weird ass. Does anyone else's kitty do this?

That's fairly common. Cats actually like running/flowing water and there are even fountain and waterfall dishes that add current to the water that helps attract them to drink out of it. They also like very fresh water. If it's been sitting out any more than about 20-30 minutes, oftentimes they won't drink it. They also like cold water for some reason. Oftentimes, they like it when you put 2-3 ice cubes in there, especially during summer. However, the catch is that once they get used to that, they may not want it any other way. Cats can be temperamental and finicky, especially as they get older, so stuff like that is not uncommon at all. It's all part of being a cat owner. 😸

Yes. And certain breeds of cats are a lot more likely to be this way than others. Over the decades, we've had cats that are fine with the water dish, and others who only want fresh water, and prefer to drink out of the gutter than their own clean, fresh water dish (but mostly want to drink from a running tap). Maine Coons are one such breed that is widely known for this behavior, and for acting more like a typical dog than a cat (they'll go for walks with you, no leash, and will follow you back home).

Isn't it interesting how even "dumb animals" have their own unique instincts and personalities?

That’s normal, most animals prefer fresh running water to a stagnant bowl. Even my dogs will opt from drinking from the hose or a creek as opposed to their still bowl. My sisters cats refused to drink water from a bowl until she got one of those automatic water bowls

I had a cat that only wanted running water. I found a water bowl that constantly runs water. You have to change the filter periodically.

The sink water is cleaner than water thats been sitting there for hours. Cats also like being warm.

That is one cute kitty. I have heard of cats that did this. None of mine ever did. They used to drink out of the toilet bowl.

My cat always drank from her bowl. A friend's cat loved to drink from a running source, so they bought a machine that cycles water in a small waterfall.

I’ve never heard of this kind of behavior. Though Papaya will sometimes rub her butt in the floor like a cartoon character or something. I haven’t witnessed it myself but whenever my brother and I are with our father, our mom will tell me about it.

My cat will not drink from a bowl. She requires a filtered fountain and the water must be changed every twelve hours or so.
