They aren't.
But there's a stereotype (that many consider racist, but several of my black friends say often), about black people loving chicken and watermelon. So that's why some people might consider watermelon to be racist, even when it's not.
My dad, who is basically 100% Mexican, loves watermelon and always has some in the house when it's in season. And when my friends are over for BBQ in the summer, I often have one in a cooler. My black friends always eat it, and they ALWAYS comment about it, making racist jokes at each other. No one is actually offended, though, and they complain (jokingly) if I don't have any when it's in season. None of my friends are afraid to make fun of each other or themselves, so it's a good time.

Way back in the 80s during basic training my best friend was a black kid from Baltimore. One Saturday I had to do a work detail at the mess hall. After I was done I stole a watermelon out of the refrigerator and brought it back to the barracks. I was going to share it with my friends. My best friend looked at me with disgust saying that you should never offer watermelon to a black kid. I felt so bad because I thought I was doing something good. Then he started laughing ans said he was only kidding. I still have a picture of the two of us eating watermelon.

I, for one, am tired of it. Watermelon is delicious. So is fuckin fried chicken. I want to be stereotyped as loving it.
