The hardest emotional attachments are those where we see what we want to see rather than what actually exists. When dealing with reality, it tends to be easier to move on.
Let's say you truly love someone and want that person to be happy. Once you realize that person would be happier with someone else, we find it easier to be happy for their happiness. If, on the other hand, it's all about our own desires or sense of entitlement, the loss lingers till we replace the last person with a new person.
When our child grows up and moves away, do we dwell on our loss, or are we happy our loved child has reached this stage in his/her life? It's much harder to get on with our life when we focus on what we believe we should have rather than truly feeling happy for the other person.
