I allways understood it as denim is the material and all the things you can make with it, while Jeans specifically are the pants that are most of the time bolted in addition to sewn.

Denim is the material. You can get other denim clothes such as jackets for that "double denim" look.

Denim is a modern French invention. You're thinking of Indian dungaree. To confuse things further in Britain dungerees are a type of clothing most commonly made from denim.
