Would it be assault or battery if someone block a slap or punch?

This is what my sister did once several years ago. She can handle her own but she broke up immediately. To her, it doesn't matter if you can defend yourself and finish them off (she could do but won't overdo it; she's a martial artist aware that her body can be a deadly weapon)... violence is a deal-breaker to her.

Though this always has me wondering. If someone's attempt to hit you was neutralized (you're a martial artist after all) and it never made contact as a result, is that assault or battery? If my sister would've pressed charges, what would it be?
