Swords, does size matter?

Today in Scotland, King Charles was presented with another big sword during a ceremony. The sword was bigger than the one held by Penny Mordaunt during his coronation, because as we all know from GAG that size matters.

So for a bit of fun, I thought I'd ask which of these famous British big swords would you like to play with and swing about choppity choppity.

Swords have thousands of different designs and sizes, because the sword you need depends entirely on the situation - the enemy you're facing, the armor (if any) you are facing, whether that enemy is mounted or on foot, whether you are on offense or defense, fighting styles and "rules", and many other things. A given sword might be ideal in one situation and an absolute disaster in another.

These huge claymores would require a massive, Conan-esque man to wield it, and it would only make sense if he was fighting mobs of unarmored, unmounted "infantry" with only blunt weapons. That kind of fighting wasn't around for long, and even when it was, those swords would be far too big for all but the top 0.01% of giant men.

King Charles would fall over if he tried to swing one of those things, and who knows how many of his own people he'd injure if he tried.

Swords seem way overrated from what I can tell from the experts. If you have enough space, what you want is a super long spear that keeps poking everybody like an outboxer with a good reach and a fast jab. It's all about reach in open spaces as far as I can tell. Length is king as long as the space is available for all the length to poke people from far away.

That said, in close quarters, what you want is not so much length. You want some short weapon that you can use even when grappling and struggling with the opponent. That's also why I'm a great husband as I see it.

I think the strength & sharpness of the metal are what matter more.

Size DOES matter. A sword that is too big is too hard to wield, and leaves the carrier of it open to attack.

Yes, too big and its too heavy, to small and you lack reach.

But how big is the right size does also depend wether its one handed or two handed, if its a cutting sword or a stabbing sword and what armor does the opponent is wearing.

I like the grand sword of Wales. It looks like its just the thing for battle from the bulwark.

No matter how big it is... I have a difficult time envisioning the King using it properly :)

You need a proper tool for any specific job and sometimes is 40mm flak too big for sparrows or a heavy sword to heavy for an agile opponent.

Size matters , just nothing beats the biggest , and a dude like Charles needs a really BIG sword to compliment.

The law of diminishing returns applies when it comes to sword length, and even then sometimes a dagger is the best tool for the job.
