Is lying good, bad, or necessary?

Lying is a part of your character. You either tell the truth all the time, or you don't. Once I catch a girl telling me a lie, I would forever after be wondering if anything else she tells me is also a lie. But it never gets that far because telling me a lie is a deal breaker.

Lying isn’t a good thing but in this life it’s necessary, I don’t lie about pathetic stupid things, but if I need to lie about something important then I will, I will only tell a lie to get something I need for my survival not for stupid reasons.

Liar, Liar, pants on fire, nose as long as a telephone wire. Some kids sang that to me when I lied as a kid. I have tried to keep from lying ever since. But are white lies told to make someone feel better permitted? Like "do I look ok to go out?" Do you tell them the truth? "No, you look like crap!"? or a lie, "You look fine!" ? Isn't it really all about trust?

I mean..."undercover work" is lying for a living. Literally. To both aspects of that.

I try to keep it out of my personal life because I don't have the time/patience for what that would entail, and the apathy overrides any accidental give a shite about societal expectations of me. I don't believe in little white lies. If you aren't prepared to hear every possible answer to a question, don't ask it.

"Does this dress make me look fat?"

No the thirty pounds you put on since your parents came to visit makes you look fat, that dress just doesn't hide it.

I think lying is bad. Even a white lie. If you tell someone something looks good and it doesn’t… You’re nkt helping them. That’s not to say you’re a bitch or a dick about it.

Bur lying about bigger stuff can have bigger consequences. Even if you’re making stories up. Many times people will find out. Especially when people tell big stories that turn out to either be false, based off a story someone else told, or they told a real story but either added information, didn’t mention key details, or exaggerated it.

Once people catch you lying. They stop trusting you and many will stop talking to you altogether.

There is harmful deception and then there is diplomacy.
"No, I didn't cheat on you". when she knows you did.

Then there's:
"Does this dress make me look fat?" it does.
"Honey, you look fine to me". She knows you are being diplomatic, but not lying.

Well yeah if your talking about small stuff. You can't just go into work and say whatever you actually think about your boss. Though if you never want to be named lair nor like to lie don't answers with certainty's.

In my private life I try to be as honest as possible. In my professional life - I do throw out white lies and I withold information, which in my eyes is also part of lying - not telling the whole truth.

depends on the gender and what is being lied about it's bad for men to lie about their height or finances but it's good for women to lie about their body count and put on 50 pounds of makeup

We have a duty to tell the truth in situations where lying would cause someone else to take a action disadvantageous to themselves. There are other times where we have no duty to tell the truth and lying may be kinder.

It depends on the situation. For example if a person is from the CIA and an enemy captures him of course his going to lie to keep the US safe. If it’s something simple like telling a friend you did not ate their food then yeah that could be bad since it could diminish trust.

Dishonesty is never good, but I do understand why people feel it's necessary from time to time.

That said... a lot of people lie about the most inconsequential, pointless stuff. Like... bruh... don't lie if there's no point to lying.

The problem with telling small white lies, is that it eventually turns into devastating life altering lies. So, if you lie about taking the last cookie, it could turn into a lie about you murdering someone
