I had this precise thing happen to me when I cashier gave me the wrong change after I'd had a negative encounter with her. She kept asking the name of the cabbage I'd handed her because she didn't know its name, but kept ignoring my GIVING her the correct name. She acknowledged the name that her bagger told her, because the bagger LISTENED to me. I was bugged by this behavior, but not mad enough to bother.

But then she gave me the wrong change, which I counted since I'd given her cash and she was off by $1. I said, You've given me a dollar less that you should've. Well this was just too much for her, for some reason and she gave me incredible attitude, then after I thanked her, said, "Have a bad day," and very loudly I said, because EVERYONE heard her, "OH KNOW YOU DIDN't" called the manager, who apologized profusely, and I told him, "This young woman need to be retrained or to have a job where she doesn't encounter people." The store manager contacted me a few days later and apologized and gave me a gift card.

I told him I'd never had a cashier at any grocery give the wrong change, not apologize and then act like I had done something wrong. My impression was she gave me the wrong change on purpose because she thought I was a dithering old fool and when I showed her I wasn't an idiot, she became angry and attacked me verbally because she didn't get what she wanted: my money. I've had this happen: theft from a cashier at Walmart working in cahoots with someone behind me who distracted me during my transaction so the cashier stole my liquor purchase. Found out after I went home and unpacked my groceries. Returned to store to have loss prevention folks run the tapes to see what had happened. My purchases were supplied to me and cashier and her cohort were taken to task, I suppose. But theft under $500, no one goes to jail. Cashier lost her job tho.

There's a cashier at a gas station/liquor store that I frequent who says "Good morning" no matter what time of day it is.

He seems to be a bit "slow".

I thank him and wish him the same "Good morning", regardless of the time of day.

I figure that he amuses himself with his little joke. I further figure that the guy could use of a bit of joy in his life.

Why not play along with him? It doesn't cost me anything to do so.

I do that, too!! I've been doing it since the early `80's! It's mostly to see if anyone catches on. Most people don''t but, with those that do, the conversation goes a bit like this.
"Good morning."
"Good morning? Lol. You better check again!"
I look at my naked wrist, hold it up against my ear, pull it away and, as I start slapping it a few times, I say, "Oh! My watch must've stopped!"
If I got them to laugh, I did a good thing for them!
Likewise, people rarely pay attention to your response when they ask. "how are you?"
Again, I always say, "Awful. How are you?" Most often, they either never catch it or it'll hit them a couple moments later! For those that do hear what I said, it goes something like this,
"Hi! How are ya?"
"Awful. How are you?"
"AWFUL?"
"Oh, you too?"
"NO. I'm not awful! You said YOU were! What's wrong?"
And then I just make up something or, if I AM having a shitty day, I'll drop them a hint.
But, again, if I got them to laugh, that's fine by me.

She is really not enjoying her check out chick role. I've seen cashiers go from smiling happy on their first day, to be totally without any make up and grumpy by the third. I might say something to brighten her day.

Maybe I should ask her out? I mean either she has either a quirky humor I could enjoy or her life is so bad she is a shoo in and will probably put out on the first date.

I'd be stunned at first, wouldn't really know what to say, but if I managed to get my bearings I would apologize for whatever it was I did that gave them such a bad impression that they would openly wish that on me.

Though I guess that also depends on how it's said to me and if it's a joke or not. I guess the point of the question is that you can't tell if it's a joke.

A few years ago, I used to get a pizza almost every week from this place 2 blocks from my house. I'd walk in and pay for the za and, just before walking out, I'd tell the guys, "Have a shitty day!". They'd laugh and say the same to me.

I was on a conference call with a company whose speaker ended the call with, "Have the day you deserve!" She said it in a cheerful and chipper way, which is odd because it sounds snarky. I laughed pretty hard when the call was over.
