I had a choice between two jobs. One paid a lot more than the other but the other one was near my house and was a steady job. I took the big money one and in less than two years I was unemployed

There are several things. Some I don't want to share here.

But one that comes to mind is "loaning" my brother money. That was a big and expensive mistake
