Should I write them letters?

So... I've never been in trouble with the law in my life. I'm 42. about a month ago I messed up big time and got myself arrested. Disorderly conduct and felony drug possession.

My lawyer thinks because I have no prior record of any kind that he can get everything to go away. But worse case scenario I could be looking at a year in jail. I'm also going through a drug counseling program so we're hoping that will look good in court.

I won't lie I'm scared to death. Im not like those people in jail I'll get eaten alive in there. I stand to lose everything... my job, my apartment I could very well be homeless when I get out.

If I do get sentenced to jail time I'm really worried about my 4 teenage nieces. I won't allow them to visit me in jail, I don't want them to see me like that.

Should I write them letters before I go to court? What should I say to them? Do you think they would appreciate that? Like would it be meaningful?

Yeah it would be meaningful if you wrote them letters. Just explain to them that you made a stupid mistake, and they they should learn from you. Based off disorderly conduct alone, I don’t think you would end up going to jail, but because of your drug charge too, I’m not so sure, it might happen. Just try not to panic, the people who are usually subject to getting harassed in jail are rapists, murderers and paedophiles, people wouldn’t care about ‘disorderly conduct’. If you don’t push anyone’s buttons, you should be fine. Don’t panic about the worst just yet, you may get let off. I once got charged with ‘offensive behaviour’ (which I’m guessing would fall into the same realm as disorderly conduct) for having sex in a store’s change room- but it only led to a fine for me.

Yes write to them but not before you go to court. You don't know the outcome. Trust your lawyer. Maybe you get off and you don't go to jail. But, if you do get sentenced to jail, write the letters right before you go.
