The rest of the cup is plastic but straw is paper/cardboard construction? Is this just a New York thing?
No, this isn't just a New York thing. In many places, the rest of the cup is usually plastic, while the straw can be a paper or cardboard construction. This is to reduce the impact on the environment, as plastic straws are considered a common form of plastic waste and pose a serious threat to marine life and the environment. As a result, some places have taken steps to limit or ban the use of plastic straws to encourage the use of more environmentally friendly alternatives. New York is one of them, but other cities and regions are taking similar actions.
But the rest of the cup is plastic, so I don’t see the logic
Its just stupid to do that though. Paper straw in a plastic cup.. Nah this is some idiotic double-think.
I carry my own straws in the car for this reason. Those paper straws aren't doing anything to save plastic waste
Exactly, and they start to fall apart and bend not long after I try using it to drink with, so annoying
It's not only the company's responsibility to reduce unnecessary waste, it's yours too. It's your choice whether to willingly buy products you know will go to the landfill, or not. Sadly, fast food places are the worst for creating waste of all kinds. Particularly single use packaging. Just don't buy it, and make adjustments or provisions to your routine that creates less waste. We're all responsible for the kind of products we choose to buy.
True, I don’t buy it very often, I just thought how ironic it is with what they are doing
@Likes2drive Yeah, places that serve things in single use containers aren't really beacons of conscious thinking. lol
Yeah that’s for sure, lol
The paper straws are worse than the plastic. The paper straws have the chemicals pfos and pfoa in them which is a forever chemical. It seeps into the ground water and contaminated the water. I have it in my water and was told not to drink or cook with it because it's toxic
I didn’t know that , but it’s so annoying because they fall apart after a while when you try to use them so I don’t know what idiot came up with this
I stopped using paper straws when I found out about the chemicals in it. They don't want you to drink or cook with the water contaminated with it, but it's ok to put a straw made with the chemicals in your mouth and in your drink? Something is wrong with that
Yeah definitely, I don’t usually see paper straws anywhere out of state
I've heard California and Florida were going to follow our lead.
It might sound weird but I carry a reusable straw with me in each of my vehicles.
I should start doing that
Box stores like Walmart and target sells the reusable straws. I'm not putting a chemical in my mouth or drink that causes health issues.
Thanks for the mho

apparently some wildlife get into trouble with the straws, because some of this ends up in the environment.
Plastic, yea... you should have to bring your own refillable cup rather than single use plastic. When oil prices get high enough... and plastic goes up in price, we go more that direction.
Yeah hopefully
In Ukraine Mcdonalds cups are made from paper, lid is plastic and the straw is plastic. (Dunno how it is now, because last time i ate at Mcdonalds was 3 years ago)
I’m sure a lot has changed since then
But are those plastics biodegradeable?
I don’t think so, probably takes a long time
I think in a lot of cases recycling is a scam and after separating all the trash it just ends up in a big landfill anywas.
That’s what I was also wondering
All the plastic stuff winds up in the ocean. There is a large floating island made up of discarded plastic in the ocean as big as Rhode Island. They even find trash on the bottom of the ocean.
😮😮😮😫
its more of it lessens the pollution. since paper straws decompose and such.
What about the rest of the cup being plastic and that’s so much more plastic than a straw?
I think the idea is "at least we're trying" and just that there's probably no eco friendly cup that would really do the job for the same low cost to make
As Monica also stated, straws are part of the most detrimental waste to sea life, turtles in particular end up dying because straws get stuck in their nostrils and stuff along those lines.
Ok I see
We have that here too and I have asked myself the same question. Paper also obviously shifts the problem to deforestation.
All the solutions I can think of are unrealistic.
Yeah, I don’t see the logic in it
Yeah i usually carry my own straws. Usually either metal or thick plastic. Its so stupid. And the paper straws dissolve in like 10 minutes.
Yeah they sure do, I think I need to do that too
ok so plastic straw are more harmful then plastic cup?
who did this math?
Yeah I don’t get it either
Maybe they’re doing it one step at a time with the lids being next. lol
Hopefully 🤞
Big things can be processed and recycled but small pieces are harder to process
That makes more sense actually
