I like how 98% people say if there's ID you'll return it but otherwise you'll steal everything. So all of you would steal given half the chance.

There's many ways of returning an item without ID. If there's a bank card you take it to the local related bank and staff will contact the owner. If there's a gym card or university card or whatever along those lines you return it to the issuing business/organization and they'll contact the owner

I'll look for a ID or some form of identification in the wallet or purse with an address, if it's not there then as much as it pains me I'll just have to keep it I guess.

Find out who the owner is, based on location found go from there. Turn it into lost and found is at a business.






If doing that I would keep the cash before turning it in, and then leave my business card in their wallet with handwriting saying “I have your cash for safe keeping, call me to pick it up”




Then schedule a time and place to meet up with them to give them their cash back

If there’s some form of identification that shows who the owner is, then of course I will return it.


But if there isn’t, it would be pretty stupid of me to return it. Because anyone could say it belongs to them.

If there's any identification in it, I return it. If I found it inside a building, I turn it in to lost and found. If i find it on the streets and there is no identification, it belongs to meee

I would definitely be tempted but if it is a wallet I would turn it in at a local business regardless if there was an ID in it or not. Maybe they’ll find it, maybe they won’t but I’m not going to be that person especially since they could realistically come back looking for it. If it is at a park, for example, and I find a ten dollar bill on the ground (no wallet) I’d probably keep that as there is no real way to get it back to its original owner but if it’s at a store I’d turn it in as that person could realistically come back for it.

I voted return everything. I couldn't bring myself to find a wallet or purse with - assuming - the person's ID is in there and all their money, and just take it. Totally wrong. You gotta think about what you would want, or at least hope, someone would do for you if you lost yours.

There's a possibility they need that money for something and, I sure wouldn't like it if I lost that kind of cash and the person that found it kept it!
If, however, there's no ID at all in the wallet/purse and I have no way at all to find out who it belongs to, I'd keep it.

4 years ago, I found a $20.00 bill on the ground. There was no ID with it and no way to trace who it belonged to so, I kept it, does that make me a thief?
A few years before that I found a wallet on a computer in the library. It had ID and $10.00 in it, the girl at the next computer said it wasn't hers, the girl at the counter said all she could do was put it in lost and found and hope the owner came by to ask for it. So, I tracked the owner down and told her I found it, and we set up a time and place to meet the next day. I gave her the wallet and stood there while she checked through it to make sure everything was there. When she was satisfied, I started to leave and she pulled out the 10 to give it to me. I refused it and told her I didn't do it for the money, I just wanted to see she got her wallet back.
A couple weeks before that, I found a couple checks and a money order on the street at the end of a bridge next to where I worked. They totaled at least $900.00. I found out who they belonged to, called him up and told him I found them. He came by where I work the next day and picked them up and told me they were for bills he had to pay. When I told others at work of my find, they said they'd have cashed it and kept the money.
About 20 years earlier, I was in line at a pizza shop and spotted a 20 on the floor and picked it up. I asked the guy behind me if it was his, he claimed it was (but I doubt it) so, I gave it to him.
Am I STILL a thief?

If there's I'd in it I'd track down the owner and give everything back to them. If there's no I'd and I found it at a store or something, I'd tell the manager that I have it and give them my phone number to give to the owner of the wallet/purse. ( I wouldn't trust anyone in the store to give everything back). If I found it in the street without I'd, I'll take it

Regarding update, those items that you mentioned are forms of identification. They most likely have a name on them. I would track the person down with that information.

Return it. I'd like to say I'd do it out off a sense of right over wrong. But honestly? A few hundred or few dollars isn't going to make a lot of difference in my financial situation. But it could make a WORLD of difference in the person who lost it's financial situation. And that would be my primary motivator. I've been broke before.
