What is this? I know it’s not a smoke detector because there’s already one nearby?

I just moved into an apartment and saw this in the ceiling. It flashes red. I know it’s not a smoke detector because there’s one right next to this object. Any idea what this could be? Photo is sideways…

It looks like a device that is used by deaf people that turns on when the doorbell or the phone rings to attract the attention of the person.

If this is the device I think of, then it should only turn on when someone tries to reach you and should be off the rest of the time.

Otherwise, you can always try to contact the landlord and ask him/her what the purpose of this device is.

It looks like there might be a button in the lower right hand of the edge of the circle (as the photo is displayed with the doorway in the lower right). Does the button have any writing or a symbol on it?

Maybe it’s a Carbon monoxide detector if you already have a smoke alarm

It looks like a low voltage smoke /co detector that is interconnected to all the other apartments in your building. It is installed by an alarm company and is connected to central station.

possibly a camera to be safe tape a sheet of paper loosely over it. and wait to see if anybody asks why it does not work then you know it is monitoring your apt or if you come home and find the paper missing or on the floor
