Does anyone know what this is a picture of? You won't find many of them in today's world, if you find any at all.

It’s not a great picture, but i’m guessing it’s a card catalog. Like those formerly used to organize books into a library, as well as a means for locating them easily after. Most libraries have progressed to a digital catalog system. They are a little faster and easier as long as nothing goes wrong. A simple computer bug or power outage turns those systems into expensive paper weights. They’re also just as prone to human error as their predecessors. The only real advantage to the digital systems is simultaneously a problem. For more advanced systems, people can access the catalog from outside of the library and have an item reserved, as well as moved from one location to another for more convenient pickup. Without ever having to spend more than a minute inside a library. Most of the people who would find that useful need more human interaction, not less. But i digress.

Ironic that I just saw one at the library the other day. I wondered why it was there when I hadn't seen one for a few decades. I opened a drawer to check if they were actually using it for some reason. The drawer was empty. (I only checked one drawer)

I still don't know why it suddenly showed up. Just for display? Temporary storage? It looked brand new with newly stained and polished wood. I guess I should have asked, but I didn't.

They did the job.

I suppose DNS is the modern Dewy Decimal System.

Old library card catalog which were in place before libraries were computerized. You could look up books by title, author, general contents, so there would be about three cards for one book.

"A Boy's Will," by Robert Frost would be listed under the title, under Frost and under poetry. Today you can do the same searches in seconds instead of minutes...

Card Catalogue. I was taught how to use them when I was in elementary school, but by the time I actually needed to do any research they were replaced by computerized card catalogues. With green text on black background on the monochrome monitor... but computerized at least!

dude back in university they still had that shit. luckily they also had computers. the time wasted on just finding information that could have been used for processing information is crazy. we can be happy that we live in a time where we don't have that massive drag anymore.

Card catalog from a library. We recently retired ours from our church library. We still do things manually. They DID try to put everything "on disc" (on a 286 computer) but eventually, the computer just could not be "forward-altered" enough to handle the software, and the software couldn't be reverse-altered to work on the 286. So there it sits- a 1980's computer being a paperweight.

I saw those in the library when I was a kid. It could also be used for other information that needed to be classified, usually in the order of the alphabet, or by subject, maybe both. It's what people used before computerized databases.
