Are construction workers under-appreciated by society?

Have I failed my job daily since the day I got this job? Sure.

Have I settled at crumbling, dilapidating, barely functional (if that) work within construction? Absolutely.

But have I ruined hundreds of homes due to an inability to perform well in plumbing? No, but raise that number into the thousands and then we'd be looking at the world from my very own set of eyes, because damn right I did that.

The work does, yes. It’s by design. Just like dummy proofing inventions and contraptions. We don’t think about every component on a vehicle when it’s functioning, we just steer and drive for the most part.

When I worked in a plant, I had to learn construction. That was part of working with different trades. I had to gain breadth. It wasn’t my job to learn their depth, the failing and learning part. I had to rely on them to apply their expertise while also being responsible for the end product.

Builders, crafters, inventors, and merchants are the unsung heroes of society. They run it. They’re the foundation of the Western world. They laid down their swords and picked up a hammer. They benefit from each other because of it.

I’ve always admired and respected what they do. It is a lot of hard work and I don’t think people realize it takes a lot of brains to do that type of work. It’s not something you learn in a couple months. Not to mention the weather they work in. The extreme cold to the extreme heat. I also like how sexy the guys look in their Carhart winter clothes or t-shirts and jeans in the summer with their pouches and at times their reflective vests. 😍 You guys rock!

I don’t care where it’s made. If foreigners want to work for pennies on the hour to make me look good, they can be my guest. When they start raising themselves up, those jobs are coming back home and we’re going to automate the shit out of them.

A lot of jobs are under-appreciated. It's too bad, but also weirdly a sign that the jobs are being done well. Usually only time someone thinks about the construction worker is if they see something that's been done wrong. Otherwise if everything works/looks normal, u don't even think about it unless u've worked that kinda job b4.

@bros26 not a need. It is nice tho. & good for perspective. Like, some people think blue collar workers are dumb & lazy, not realizing it obviously takes effort & skill to do that work. Just bc u don't see all the shit that goes into it, doesn't mean there's no shit that's gotta go into it. Yknow? Also like anyone likes to be appreciated. I just sell art & yeah getting paid is enough, but when a client says thanks & even what they like about the product that feels awesome. Makes me more proud of my work & more excited to do it knowing that people who use it appreciate it. :)

& my husband painted several rooms of our house cuz they needed it, he used to be a painter, & I never noticed b4 but he actually cut in rlly well where in some buildings it's pretty sloppy. So now I notice that & appreciate it, tho the painters prolly never know that. If it was more common then they'd know it was appreciated for being done right & not just annoyed when done wrong. & I think that'd make anyone happy and more wanting to do a good job when they know they're appreciated for it!

Yes, and it's getting worse. But with the direction things are going, it may swing back the other direction. Employees in the building trades are seriously in short supply, and prices are skyrocketing. Even an unreliable "handy man" who barely knows what he's doing can get $50 an hour. Real experienced people in the trades are charging $100-200 just to show up at the door. And that's in a low cost of living area like where I live.

Society's priorities on what jobs are important and what are not is all screwed up. They think that college grads are so much more important and worth so much more. No, most college grads are overhead. The important people who keep everyone alive and dry and warm are looked down upon and aren't paid worth a shit.

I don't know, I mean probably underappreciated in the sense that many people complain about them blocking traffic sometimes. Or people don't think about all the work they are putting into it.. Basically it's as underappreciated as most manual labor jobs..

The avg workers in general is underappreciated by employers and corporations. Who cares what we think when they control our pay checks.

But to answer you seriously, I think part of society does under appreciates construction workers and any workers that work with their hands for a living. I think many (not all) rich people look down on blue collar work and think they're lesser than them.

I wouldn't work construction lol that's back breaking work. Closet thing I would do to that is water restoration or plumbing like excavation. I use to work at funeral homes out here doing internment but thats as far as I'm gonna go lol
