Do you fear tax season or get excited about it?

Usually tax season is pretty exciting for me. This year I'm a bit worried about whether we've managed to offset additional income vs expenses properly. It's going to be a surprise whether good or bad... Plus, we won't get a tax return bonus for my daughter this year. So sad 😞

But, it's still fun to run all the numbers and see how we did. Almost like a report card!

For the U. S. tax season is when we can file to get money back from the government. But, some people have to pay more because they didn't pay enough all year.

The entire US tax system needs to be scrapped. It is a weapon of tyranny to have a tax system that is completely unintelligible to the people who pay the taxes.

The US federal tax code is 6,871 pages long and if you include tax regulations and IRS guidelines it's about 75,000 pages. There isn't a single person in America who knows all the rules and even if you could read the entire 75,000 pages I doubt there is a single person who can understand it all (and that doesn't include state and local tax codes). That means enforcing the tax code is arbitrary and such arbitrary laws are unconstitutional.

There is absolutely no reason why hundreds of millions of man-hours of the valuable time of American citizens and tens of billions of the taxpayers' dollars should be wasted on the convoluted, inefficient tax system that America now has. There have been numerous alternatives proposed to do away with all the work that taxpayers have to do every year and the fear they may rightfully have about paying taxes that most of them cannot even figure out and worrying that if they overpaid they will never even know it or if they underpaid they may be subject to financial penalties or worse.

But none of these proposals ever sees daylight because corrupt Washington politicians want a system that gives them power of the people and keeps them in fear and saddled with unnecessary work.

My cpa keeps telling me, we keep filing similar numbers the computer won’t red flag you. It’s when there’s a huge change- like suddenly you’re not making any money but have a new car and fresh vacay pics. :)

Indifferent. I'm single with no dependents or anyone to claim, yet don't make enough for me to owe Uncle Sam anything, so my refund is so-so.

Yet I still have to pay to file my taxes... which makes me sad- I'm paying money to GET money: make that make sense!

We don't do things the same in the UK, so I have no understanding of American "tax season" or whatever.
Income tax is handled at the paycheck level by our employers and we don't have to think about it. VAT is incorporated into the price of products here so we don't have to think about that either. I don't have a car so I don't have to worry about motor tax. The only tax I'm involved with directly is council tax for where I live... and that is mostly dealt with via direct debit / standing order or whatever on a monthly basis. They tell me with bills if I need to change the amount, but otherwise it just keeps paying out and I don't have to think about it.
So long story short, tax is very impersonal and hidden here, and we don't really engage with it directly the way americans seem to.

Many people get back more than what they paid or end up paying nothing at all. I consider it free money at that point. Tax season is a bit of a game here to use as many legal loopholes as possible to pay as little as possible and get back as much as possible.

I don't fear it, I keep organized so it's easy, I just don't like spending time on it. I'd much prefer the government send some geeky nerd and two big soldiers with pitch forks to my door to collect. that be more entertaining and more fitting.

it’s a pain, my tax has been buggered up since 2020, I am putting money on HRMC doing their level best to do the same level of incompetence again.

for a long time, I have had to pay quarterly, so it was always a crap shoot if I had to pay more or apply any refund to the first quarter taxes.
I have grossed less and had to pay more, so that is also not a reliable indicator of what you actually owe.

I've always file single and claimed nothing. I've always gotten a refund. It's not wise if you want to invest that money yourself but it's better the government borrow it in the interim and find ethical use for it as opposed to sitting idle in a bank account.

UK here. Most of our tax is deducted at source, i. e. we never see the money. Unless you run your own business you don't need to do anything.

I’m the Uk we r taxed at source by our employer, we don’t need to fill out tax returns unless u earn over a certain amount or u have multiple sources of income
