What's the first skill that comes to mind when you think of someone with good social skills?

Again, hard to pick just one. If I have to, guess I'd say "good contact" as my German, broken-English oma used to say. Meaning, they look you direct in the eyes (but not awkwardly or in an unnerving way), are just as interested in listening as getting their own things across, and as they say about good acting, they are really listening, not just pretending to listen and waiting for their turn to talk. Now that, I notice. I like it so much, I even enjoy watching the exchange between two people on TV, whether real life or fiction. I find that focus on another, and the effort to communicate effectively and with purpose or pleasure to be a beautiful thing.

Extremely active listening is an ultimate social skill emphasized here in Japan, although it tends to annoy people not used to it. I also find it very difficult to do in text communication. Yet a typical conversation in Japan often looks like this if person B has great social skills:

Person A: I went to an Italian restaurant today and the food was delicious!
Person B: Wow! You went to an Italian restaurant today, yes?

We call aizuchi and it's associate with someone who has good social skills. Another is being able to understand the vibes of the entire room. We call people who lack it KY (kuuki yomenai, which roughly translates to "Can't read the air.") For example, a person who is KY might make a joke when everyone else is talking about something serious, disrupting the serious mood.

Quick thinking/processing speed. The ability to make your words flow without any pauses or stuttering and you to come up with witty responses on the spot easily. Even if your responses aren't accurate, some bullshit artists have a way of making you believe them because of their delivery. It's something I'm not the best at. I'm really good at coming up with an intelligent response if I'm given enough time and especially if I can type it out like I am here. But if I'm in a conversation with someone, my ability to put my thoughts into words kinda sucks and I don't sound as eloquent as I do here.

Same for me. I say "like" a lot & usually have a poor structure to things. I'm much better at refining things through writing. 🤣

Same here man. I used to practice with a friend in this game where your friend chooses a topic for you and you have to talk about that topic without using filler words like "like". I suck at it, but trying to get better.

I noticed that I got better when I would record myself talking & then listen back to the recording with a critical ear. But haven't done it in a while though.

for someone to be able to fine tune any or every skill they have... that's what will really take them to the next level

this of course, requires for that someone to be genuinely confident in themselves and also versatile in both personality and character but more importantly, genuinely interested on other people as well and not just self centered with themselves

You have to be a good listener and have a good memory. Years ago I did a job at our local City Hall. I was talking to the guy that called me in and suddenly the mayor shows up. He introduces me to the mayor and tells the mayor what I was going to be doing. He wa there for maybe 30 seconds. I came back a year later and I see the mayor walk by. I said "Good Morning Mr, Mayor" and the mayor stopped and smiled and said "Good Morning Exit." I was amazed that he remembered who I was.

Active listening. It's important to give your full attention to others, showing genuine interest in what they have to say. Like recently I had a conversation with a friend about Excel spreadsheets. There's a whole world just waiting to be discovered within cells and rows. It inspired me to organize my sock drawer.
