Do you always (or usually) go with your gut instinct?

Question

Name a scenario where your gut "saved" you, or listening to it turned out to be a great idea/course of action.

Name also a situation where your gut DIDN'T save you. And it was a mistake (big or small) in which case you SHOULDN'T have listened to your gut...

And what IS a gut instinct anyway? Do you think it's another word for IMPULSE? Or your "Feelings" or "Hunches"? I'm real curious what you guys think.

I usually don't trust my instincts in any nontrivial decision. I used to play a lot of Poker (NLHE, PL Omaha, 7CS, 5CD, etc) in casinos and online, never for massive amounts of cash but for fun.

First thing I had to learn was to distrust my gut instincts and think more analytically. I started off just bleeding money left and right since my gut instinct was horrible, trying to pin my opponents down to their exact hole cards and often being wrong about it. "He must have rivered the flush to check-raise me on the river! My trips are no good!"

So the first thing I had to learn was to play more analytically, placing my opponents on possible ranges of hands (not exact hands) and only using the most reliable evidence to narrow down the range, never getting to exact two cards in HE, e. g., unless I had enormous evidence to arrive at such a tight range. It was only then that I started turning out to being a losing or break-even player to a profitable one.

As for the way I define gut instinct, I'd just call it hasty judgments absent rigorous analysis and sufficient evidence.

I had a vision of my squad getting shot with shotguns before doing something, we never proceeded with what we are doing so i like to believe we dodged a bullet, literally, the weirdest part is all 5 of us had a piece of the same vision the same night, if you put all the visions together, it showed a last stand with police, my little bro also was walking late at night one time and he got a strong gut instinctual feeling and when he turned around there was someone with a hoodie and a big ass knife walking fast towards him, that's when he ran, if he would've ignored it he never would've turned around and he would've gotten stabbed from behind most likely.

I usually go with my intuition but sometimes that gets me in trouble so lately I’ve become a little more analytical when dealing with problems

Our unconscious mind takes in a lot of stuff. In my model it pops up red flags to the conscious mind if something is odd. For example on opening the door to my apartment I immediately had a 'someone has been in here' flag pop up. An hour later I found stuff was missing.

I take the red flags seriously but act on them with my conscious mind.

When it comes to pople the gut is really important. Judging peoples intentions and priorities. But with other decisions I don't use my gut a lot.

Not any more. My gut has got me in trouble. I jump to the worst possible outcome as a thought and worry needlessly about things. Usually, in terms of my own life it ends up being either neutral or good.

Sometimes yes, and sometimes no. Sometimes I go with my gut and I regret it. Sometimes I don't go with my gut and I regret it. It depends on the situation for me.
