I did indeed get whooped growing up and I do indeed believe in physical discipline because growing up in that form of discipline, I know it works and is very effective, it is psychologically proven that speaking to people most of the time doesn't work cause people learn from experience and they shrug off other people's advice, listening to advice is self taught and no one is born with it, fear plays a big part in learning experiences, without fear, there's no change in perspective on what brings bad outcomes, negative emotions for the most part play a part in character development and as a kid there was nothing scarier than your dad and the belt 😂

I see children and the way they behave with their parents now and you legit have parents getting hit and screamed at by their children, some parents spoil their kids and it leads to terrible results, on a somewhat related note I overhear my friends mom say to my mom "sometimes I feel like grabbing a belt, lighting it up on fire and hitting them between their buttcheeks" in Spanish, that shit had me rolling 💀

I definitely did. My parents were real old school. I was also the oldest in the family so I was the center of attention and usually not in a good way.

But I also had undiagnosed severe ADHD which made me act weird and unpredictable at times. But I never enjoyed being “naughty” like other kids do. I didn’t like destroying things or bullying other kids just for the thrill of it.

So this led to my mother thinking that I was a misbehaving unruly kid and she parented me the same way she was parented by whooping my ass. But her judgment was wrong more often then it was right. She had no patience and would just assume the worst about me. Her core motivation was how I made HER look to other people. She was obsessed about her image.

My dad kicked my ass too. But he usually had better judgment and good reason to do so. He did it to discipline me for the sake of being a good parent. Not for his “image” among other people. The only time he was wrong is he overreacted for how I sometimes back talked my mother. But she was easily offended often over fickle and ridiculous. Sometimes she completely misjudged the situation but she has zero self control over her initial “feelings” about it.

Anyway one night in mid 20s I was staying over my folks house. I had my own place but I was staying over. I was working on my laptop and my dad came and sat down at the dinner table across from me. Out of nowhere he apologized for beating me as a kid. Told me not to do the same to my kids

I was caught off guard and surprised. He didn’t have to apologize. While his beatings were more severe they weren’t frequent and he was usually justified (minus maybe 2-3 times).

But my mother wasn’t there. She never apologized and she was overall much worse then he was. It’s one the reasons I stopped talking to her years ago unless I see her at family get togethers. She had the gall to once tell me “don’t beat your kids” without ever mentioning a hint of an apology. She believed admitting fault = admitting defeat.

I don’t respect that attitude even if it’s from my own matter.

It’s her genes that made me a live wire, so I feel her😂 I was blowing her off once in high school when she was yelling at me about me report card, I was like “yeah, yeah, whatever…”, and I put my head down in my arms on the table like I was going to take a nap. She grabbed me by the hair, yanked my head up, and straight PIMP SLAPPED me😂😂😂

My nose started bleeding like crazy, and I stormed out of the house. Some cops pulled up while I was walking and questioned me because I was all bloody. They finally got it out of me that my mom slapped me up because they were pressing me and I was finally like “you know what? I’m usually solid, but I wish they WOULD arrest her, I BET she won’t put hands on me again!”, lmao, but they just laughed and were like “welp…that’s why you don’t talk back to your mother”, and just rolled out😂 The one time I ever talked to police and they’re just like “sucks to be you, kid.”💀💀💀

When I was young enough to be spanked I used to catch a wooden spoon or a hairbrush, haha. Or I might just catch a fresh one to the back of the head if we were out in public. Usually straightened me out pretty effectively, to be honest.

They do not have enough inner strength and patience to understand that kids need love, understanding, and help to grow up and be independent.

If kids cry or yell, they don't do it because they are mean to you. They give you a sign - something is wrong. Maybe they are scared, tired, or overwhelmed with their emotions. They are kids ffs, they still learn, right? And we should show them the path and teach them, not punish them because they feel and react...

A few years ago Drama Queen had a crisis and used much too much alcohol, she had also drug episodes... how do you think, how would this end if I resorted to physical assault? Would she trust me and tell me about her struggles? Was it easy to me as a mother seeing my kid in her own vomits? or totally drunken in the hospital? Or be called by the police? Was it easy seeing my kid struggle? No... but trust needs time. Every time something happened I was with her. I slept on the stool in the hospital by her bed, I found specialists, I defended her if needed. She didn't do it to hurt me. She was crying for help. And when she saw, I'm always there, for her, no judging or evaluating, just supporting her, she started to talk.

It's already a year when she is lear, attending school and planning her studies. We both needed to be strong to survive it. If I was weak and smacked her or insulted her... there is a chance she wouldn't be on this side of the mirror anymore. Or she would become a drug addict.

She didn't need my weakness and frustration. She needed my wisdom and strength.

Both my parents got physical discipline but chose to raise me in a loving matter. Having a sort of best friend relationship with my mom helped me a lot to be more honest with her. Strict parents make the best liars after all from what I've seen. Some friends I had (usually Moroccan as ethnicity and Muslim as religion) got physical discipline and rebelled the most against their parents and their religion. I feel like just not being a doormat parent without physical discipline can work well too so your kids won't resent you in the future.

Yes, sir, daughters seem to be more responsible and get in less trouble but home life can be pure hell! I grew up with two brothers, while we did get in trouble, home life seemed peaceful (at least I think it was) raising four girls didn’t seem as peaceful. No, I did not. There are other ways to discipline a child. My parents used other ways to make me understand what I did wrong. I think if you physically assault a child there are possibilities that the child would be even more wild and physically abusive towards others as well since children have a tendency to mimic things they have seen at home and normalize that behavior. Apart from considering it traumatic, I also consider it very ineffective.
