That would have to be my first DJ/sound system, though I certainly didn't buy it all at once. When I started, I had a bit of my own equipment (one turntable, CD player, and cassette deck) and I had to borrow a second of each from other people. I also had to rent my speakers and amp and even briefly the DJ mixer (that was the first piece I bought) for each gig, which ate up a good chunk of my fee. But I reinvested nearly every penny I made (I had another job to live on) from DJing back into my gear and music, so gradually I was able to rent less and less and keep more of the money I was making.

At the time, gear was (relatively) more expensive than today, and also bigger and heavier and required more power, so you couldn't skimp or you'd trip circuit breakers during a gig and piss off the dance floor and the customer.

I didn't get my own car until I was just about to turn 18, because all of my money was buying audio gear and music - there was no downloading, much less streaming music in the late 80s, you had to buy everything, and carry everything in a physical format, so every DJ was naturally limited in their music catalog, because you couldn't carry 20 crates of records and more of CDs to every gig. If people requested a song that wasn't really popular, there's a good chance you wouldn't have it, and people were a lot more accepting if you didn't have it back then, because that was a common experience.

I think I had $6-7,000 in late 80's money - which would be at least double that today - in gear alone, and I didn't even have a wireless mic, and my light show was kind of a joke because I made it myself out of PVC pipes and colored flood lights because that's all I could afford. But I never had a complaint about my gear and I got lots of compliments on my performances, and sometimes people would pass around a tip jar and I'd make an extra $50-100, and that was huge at the time.

I'm glad I'm not still using that gear - it was big, bulky, heavy, and didn't sound as good - but I was thankful to be able to get it at the time. Being able to DJ was so much better than working at Burger King for $3.25/hour before taxes, and having to clean the grill and hood to close the store WHILE the grill was still running with all of it's safety shields removed.

When I was about 14 or 15, I bought my first album with my own money. "Through The Past, Darkly" by The Rolling Stones.
Somewhere around that time, I spent $60.00 on a new pair of shoes (boots) that I wanted. I think it was with birthday money.
When I was 18 and got my first full time pay check. I went to the record store and blew most of it on a box of new albums. The first 3 Queen albums, the first 4 Chicago albums and I forget which others, possibly a couple Pink Floyds. Probably $50 or $60, if not more. At least a dozen albums. I'd seen other people doing that and wanted the experience of doing the same just once in my life!
When I joined my band in 1980, I cleaned out my life's savings to buy a Synare (percussion synthesizer) for over $800. A couple years later, it vanished into thin air!!

Depends what you deem significant. Price or meaning to you? I bought a BMX bike when I was like 10 or 11 and I earned it from a paper route. Took me a few moths to save enough for it so it felt significant to me at the time.
