Are ancestry DNA tests accurate and safe? Is it worth taking one?

So, I've been wanting to take a DNA test for a while now, since I am curious about my ancestry (I've been trying to find information about it for ages now). However, I've got a nagging feeling that it might be silly to give a private company my literal DNA. Having read their conditions, they seem to be under no obligation to discard/destroy DNA after test results etc.

I've heard somewhere that some companies could sell that data to other companies and may use your DNA as a means of rejecting you from things such as medical insurance..

Are there any companies which are trustworthy and creditted? And do the benefits outweigh the risks? Can a DNA test really tell you where your family was from, or is it just a scam? Plus, is poking around in the past and stirring up old secrets, wise?

I made it simple for myself, I don't want the government to have any fresh DNA samples of me so I don't do it, I guess it really depends if you care about your DNA samples being shared with anyone else

Yea, I'm not curious enough tbh, I know a few from the family that I got now

I wonder what that means about family members who do then. Because if you family members do this then they already have a chunk of you DNA.

I think those ancestry tests are some what of a scam. A few years back identical twins sent in DNA samples to one of these places. The results show 2 different backgrounds.
