1 yI'm a very safe driver but I'm not very good.
I have a much easier time driving in Japan since Japan has more rules for traffic, like when there's a lot of traffic and people are trying to merge into our lane, all Japanese abide by a simple rule. Let one person merge and then pass, and the person behind us does the same. We don't let two people merge, we don't let no people merge, we always let one person merge and then pass.
In the US when I had to drive, I was always upsetting people since I drive the speed limit (never over, not even 5mph), people would honk at me letting one person merge the Japanese way only to find the person merging behind them rude and shoving their way in front of me (letting two people merge when I only intended one to merge), etc. We tend to have be more aggressive to drive well in the US and I'm not at all aggressive.
In Japan, I'm a better driver. I don't have to be very aggressive at all.
04 ReplyIn the US, I'm the type of driver that gives a lot of people road rage being quite slow and letting other people ahead of me and so forth. π
I also tended to upset passengers driving the speed limit when everyone tends to go 5-10mph over. But to me it's a speed limit, not a speed recommendation, and I don't want to give a police officer any excuse whatsoever to give me a speeding ticket (been driving now for 28 years and never got one speeding ticket; it's impossible since I always drive the limit).

When you speak of the U. S. we have a similar scenario here in Italy. Everyone seems to create a driving code of their own and you have to have 4 eyes, not two. My best policy when there's someone behind me that's in a rush is turn into the first slip road and let everyone pass by and get back on the road without too much stress!!π Thank you as always for sharing!!
I watched some videos of driving in Italy and that looks so stressful to me! I also like to drive in the slow lane when there is one.
We do similar thing here in Japan as well as on escalators, like this:![Would you call yourself a good driver?]()
Some people might wonder why all Japanese stand on one side of the escalator leaving so much space but it's so that anyone in a hurry can walk/dash up the other side.

1 yYes, I am a good driver. I have had no moving violations in the last 10 years, last parking ticket I had was 25 years ago. In 40 years of driving, I've been involved in only 3 accidents, none of them my fault, and none of them involved any injuries.

I received an $80.00 infraction in Canada for tailgating. They have radar guns that measure tailgating. I asked the cop how close I was to the bus ahead of me. He said I was 80 feet behind the bus. (he said it in meters, but it's not hard to convert it.) Are you fucking kidding me? In America, the people are 8 inches from your back bumper.
When Saint George Floyd died, cops stopped policing traffic violations. You could now do 80 mph in school zones. Why? Because it was safer for the government to see no evil and hear no evil.

u 1 yFor the most part. Iβll admit, I do speed a bit, but Iβve never caused any accidents or damage to my car, and the 1 accident I have been in was unavoidable on my end.

1 yMy insurance dropped me several years ago after falling asleep at the wheel and totaling both my jeep and the, parked, car I slammed into. That is still my only major accident in ~20 years of having a license. To me - yes, to my insurance - could be better.

1 yYes. Haven't had so much as a fender bender in over 20 years. I religously use my turn signals and never drive more than 4 miles over the speed limit. If I know I'll be drinking, I'll get an Uber or Lyft or ride with a designated driver.

So far zero accidents. So I think I'm pretty good. I think having driven tractors and other vehicles that weren't cars in the past helped me a lot.
