Fun equals sharing things in common. Find out what they like and share thoughts on that instead of sharing thoughts on random things hoping and expecting them to care.

Random things is ANYTHING that you are not asked about. Let the guy do the work... let him ask you questions. Embrace the silence... don't feel the need to fill it up with random garbage of life because you feel weird nobody is talking. If you feel he is not being present and interested in you then excuse yourself and leave the room. Go to the restroom, go make a phone call, go back and hopefully he will have better focus. Just spitballing here because I really have no idea what your real issue is here.

Do people try to avoid talking to you ir do they try to cut conversations short

Whenever I say something, they just say a lot of, and I mean quite often, of: "ohh okay" or "oh cool" like they're not interested in what I am saying. you know what I mean?
