A man or a woman?
- 1.8K opinions shared on Other topic.
+1 yIt is far more likely for me personally that a bear would protect me from a person.
I usually initiate parental instincts in adult bears and attachment in baby bears (i've spent time with wild and domestic ones before). It is a lot harder for me to get along with people because human interaction is generally based on very complex language and individualism, so there is lots of room for disagreements and misunderstandings (and thus altercations).
Whereas if you are viewed as adorable, friendly, fearless and non threatening, a predatory non human mammal tends to instinctually be posessive of you, especially ones in the carnivora clade (bears, dogs, cats, raccoons, civets, weasels, hyenas, mongooses, etc.). They are extremely influenced by how you behave and how you look.
If you appear imposing/threatening/scared, or you flee, you're generally fucked, but if you act like their parent or baby, they will literally defend you with their life or beg you for attention, much like domestic dogs.12 Reply- +1 y
In the rare case I was attacked by a bear though, I'm probably screwed regardless of anyone helping, even if they have a gun, the time to properly aim the shot without hitting me in the process, is more than enough time for the bear to have already killed me.
The odds of successfully fending off an attack before its too late is pretty much zero, but the odds of being attacked is almost as low unless you act like a jackass or prey to the bear, so just don't do that. - +1 y
As far as a man vs a woman, there are more men who are good with firing guns and staying calm under emergencies, this is of course culturally driven, but as I said, none of that matters, the person is fucked either way if the bear attacks them, even an elite marksmen most likely cannot help you in time unless they fire before the attack happens/before the bear reaches to person, but bears are endagered and people jump the gun thinking its an attack rush when its not, so don't do that either.

Asker+1 yI know, but a black/brown bear will feel like a grizzly/polar bear when it's attacking you. It has happened.
Go watch the movie Backcountry. It's loosely based off of a seemingly unprovoked black bear attack.
Asker+1 yIronically, In the movie the man dies and the woman survives.
What really happened was the woman was attacked by the bear from behind. The man tries saving her, but it was too late. He fought off the bear but was severally injured.
Asker+1 ySeverely
+1 yhahahaha Im hoping the man would but tbh nowadays some men would rather not help a stranger who is being attacked due to possibly getting attacked themselves. Not men's fault, women have pushed them away in society.

Asker+1 yThere's definitely a lot of men that wouldn't help
Asker+1 yI'd like to say I would help if it was a random person... but aside from reporting it, I probably wouldn't lol maybe I would if a group of people were also trying to help. There's strength in numbers

Yeah, thats the smart answer.

I used to have this come up in schools testa for possible future jobs. I can see myself defending most people from bears. Filming a few others...

*school tests. I can see yesterday's theme of not checking my wording before clicking send is transferring into today too..
Asker+1 y@dustybiker2 ticking the bear isn't going to save me buddy
Asker+1 yTickling

I want to test it.
Asker+1 y@dustybiker2 if I'm being attacked by a bear I want you to get as far away as possible. No dying for me lol

Therefore, I would choose a woman.21 Reply
Asker+1 yThanks for explaining
Anonymous(25-29)+1 yProbably a woman. Recently saw videos of women being attacked or robbed and men just looked and walked by, women helped.

Men figured women didn't need men
Asker+1 yI've seen some videos like that, but I've seen a lot more videos of men defending women.
Also, keep in mind, the question wasn't about being attacked/robbed by men. I think when women see another woman being attacked/sexually assaulted it's personal to them because they have a "that could have been me" mentality. It makes sense that would be the one area where more women would step up.
But in general, when dangerous situations arise, who do you truly believe is more likely to put themselves in harms way to protect a stranger? And who is more likely to panic and freeze?
+1 yA man. But, you know... Maybe men shouldn't. I mean, women seem like they'd rather be mauled by a bear as opposed to rescued from one by a "strange man" it's as if they don't want to view men as heroic anymore for doing what they're stereotypically supposed to do.

+1 yIt wouldn't matter. No human being is strong enough to ward off a grizzly attack!

Asker+1 yI've heard a lot of stories about men jumping in to help, even allowing a grizzly to be distracted with mauling them instead so the woman or child can get away.

Well then I bow to your superior knowledge of the grizzly. We don't get a lot of Bears here in the UK, except maybe for Winnie the Pooh and Paddington. can't remember anyone needing protection from either of them!
Asker+1 yI'd fight off Winnie the Pooh for you lol
- +1 y
As long as you don't try and tigger jump all over the place afterwards :P

British guards are the reason you don't see a lot of bears in the UK... Just speaking my thoughts. Mommy and daddy live in London now.
- +1 y
Yup 🥹

"It wouldn't matter. No human being is strong enough to ward off a grizzly attack!"
Indeed, not without a gun, its ultimately better to just befriend the bear or ignore it by not being seen as a threat. Martyrdom or antagonizing it is just crazy - +1 y
@TheSpaceGnome I learn so much on here :)
- +1 y
I can't believe I typed "mommy" here. I don't think I have ever spelt it that way outside speaking to Americans about their mothers. End random annoying thought.

Should I or shouldn't I @dustybiker2 *Doesn't know whether to be pedantic or not.. It's actually Mummy if you're talking about London.. <<<<Waits for the fallout!

You cheat, I cheat.
Asker+1 yOk that was kind of clever lol

Hahaha
Going back to sleep this time...💤
Asker+1 yI didn't pay attention to the category, but considering this debate started my women thinking most men will default to raping them... girls behavior is fitting. Lol
- +1 y
At least you admit to cheating. Points for honesty by default.
Asker+1 yI didn't admit to cheating lol I said I didn't pay attention when selecting a category
