How can you sell a malfunctioning car?

It depends on what's wrong with it. If it's worth it for somebody to fix, you can sell it like any other car - like FB Marketplace. Craig's List, etc. Put in the ad what is wrong with it. Anyone buying a car like that will probably work on it themselves. So they can fix it considerably cheaper than taking it to a shop.

If it's not worth fixing, then you can sell it to a scrap yard. They will probably come and haul it away. They might pay by weight rather than year and model. You might get $200-300 that way, possibly more if it's a newer car with good body parts.

You can also sell parts if you want to bother with it. That is often how you get the most money for it, but it's a lot of work. You'll need space for all the parts. The catalytic converters can potentially be worth a couple hundred dollars each.

I have heard of people putting sawdust in the crankcase to quiet a noisy engine. I traded in myTahoe that had a transmission was slipping. I knew that soon it would die so I traded it in. I did not want to sell it to a private party like I usually do

I sold a Prius that didn't run on Craig's List years ago. It needed an engine rebuild but everything else was in good shape and the hybrid battery was fairly new.

People made offers but I held out for the price I was asking. A mechanic finally bought it to rebuild. He picked it up with his tow truck and paid me cash.

@KrakenAttackin. Nope. It was a hybrid with a combustion engine. I can't remember exactly what was wrong. I think one of the cylinders wasn't working and it needed at least a valve job.

It has served me well for quite a few years, but I didn't think it was worth spending the money on. So I was glad to get rid of it. That mechanic probably fixed for next to nothing compared to what I would have had to spend.

I had bought it used with low mileage and in excellent condition.
At 149,000 miles, the hybrid battery went bad. Thankfully, it was warrantied up to 150,000, so the dealer replaced if for free. I think the car had 183,000 miles when I sold it. So the battery, alone, was worth a lot.

You should be honest with any flaws with the vehicle... Bit the mechanic in me would say "sold as seen"

Yes, As Is and be honest in the advertisement or just sell to people who take cars in any condition.

I would donate and take a tax write off. Or if you can talk a car salesman into trading in for a new car. I’ve done that before.

Depends on what is wrong with the car. Some vehicles have known issues, other issues are due to owner lack of maintenance or abuse.
