When you fuel up at the ⛽, do you stand by your vehicle or re-enter it?

I read a study from 2018, that concluded, 78% of fires at the pumps involved women, mainly because women tend to multitask and will re-enter their vehicle to do other things and become "statically charged", while most men stand by their vehicle while it fills. My question is, do you re-enter your vehicle or stand next to it? If you do re-enter it, what exactly do you do while waiting? I also know weather can play a role but for my question, imagine the weather being ideal.

I do remember that! People still believe it, even though it's been debunked for twenty years. The funny thing is, I never knew most started from static electricity. I was actually shocked when fire fighters were actually starting them by getting "charged" then grabbing the nozzle.

In the nineties all gas stations here had these big rubber funnels over the metal nozzle to remove the flammable fumes. What happened with them?

We have that too but a lot of the time the damn nozzle will constantly stop if you stick it all the way in. I always have that problem, so it seems to work better if I only stick it in a couple inches. I know a few people that have that problem with newer pumps. It's a pain in the ass!

I don't stand by it while it's filling but I don't sit in my car either. That's my time to clean all the garbage out of it. I also stock up on those blue rags they have! If they have any, half the time they don't refill them lol

Well that depends! I have always stayed outside the car watching the pump until I was driving cross country one time and we had to get gas in 20 degree weather, I didn't have any gloves and the pump was super slow. One of those take 15 minutes to get a tank type slow pumps. No way was I standing outside in that weather.

I stay outside the vehicle, usually cleaning the windows with the squeegee.

Some states have disabled the keep-on latch on the nozzle so that you have to stay with it and keep the handle depressed.

I stand by the pump and watch and wait for it to get full, then comes the shock of how much it costs each time.
I never have re-entered my car while filling up. No reason to.

You can’t go in the car, you need to hold the pump handle. It was one of those safety things and removed with modern auto sensing pumps.

I always standby my vehicle. When the air is very dry you should touch the side of the fuel pump to discharge any static charge you have accumulated prior to pumping fuel.

I actually was going to say this! That actually happened to me. I was in my car and a guy that was filling up next to me ran over and grabbed the nozzle. I got out of my car and saw there was gas all over the ground. It never shut off!

I worked at a gas station in high school and learned to be very careful around gas pumps and when pumping gas into peoples' cars. If something malfunctions it can be fatal.

Sometimes if it is very cold out I jam a tennis ball in the gas pump and get back in my truck and wait unil it fills up.
