If you're actually in your 40s, there's a brief "slump" before you hit "midlife crisis"... It's partially hormonal, partially stress-based. Go see your physician to make sure that you're physically ok and talk to him/her about this. You may just need a change of scenery for a little while... a new hobby, etc.

Be ready for a similar think to happen again when you hit ~60.

If you're a little younger (in your 30s), you may just be struggling with ennui -- the French have wine and sarcasm to get over feelings of ennui, which I don't recommend if that's not your standard personality. It's very common to feel ennui if you feel like you're stuck in a rut (same job, same routine, same town, same arguments, etc. etc. etc.). Again... a bit of travel and change of scenery tend to help you snap out of this sort of slump.

Sounds like it could be a chemical imbalance, get some blood work done and see if you're low on testosterone or thyroid.
