Utter nonsense.

First point- "violet" is not a color. It is a plant. A plant that is a particular shade of purple. Something that's the same color of the plant may well be called "violet-colored", but calling something "brick-colored" doesn't make "brick" a color; "violet" is no different.

Second point- purple is, indeed, a combination of red and blue. That is what "being a secondary color" means. It's like saying "green" doesn't exist, because it's just a combination of yellow and blue.

Third point- purple absolutely exists along the light spectrum, as can be observed by anyone with a beam of sunlight and a prism. Nor is this a "mixture of red and blue light", since red is at the far opposite end of the beam. It's like these people have been looking at wheels for so long they've forgotten that lines exist.

Fourth point- while Newton may not have used the word "purple", he distinctly separated seven colors of light. He was, however, dead wrong, as anyone with a sunbeam and a prism can see; the man's obsession with Jewish numerology wouldn't let him get away with admitting only six. And anyone claiming my eyes are simply not sensitive enough to pick up subtle changes in shade would have to explain why this "indigo" (which is also a plant and not a color; I don't know if that's a coincidence) doesn't make the distance between blue and purple longer; it's the same length as any other transition.

Fifth point- different cultures do, indeed, have different words for different colors, and different numbers of gradations. The same is true, however, of pretty much everything else. While this MAY reflect differences in physiology or neurology between various ethnic groups, it doesn't change the objective nature of reality. And to that end...

Sixth point- something being the product of perception inherently makes it the product of perception. This is literally the reason why Iconoclasm is stupid, and likewise the crazy overreaction to pictures of Muhammad.

Nonsense. The word comes from the porphura Greek after a shell fish from which it was extracted. The other name you'll hear in the UK is puce, of French and latin origins.

The problem is we tend to group colours like indigo, violet, puce, aubergine etc into one group we call purple. This isn't unusual, one time we grouped blue and green as one colour group as we did red and orange.

She's wrong. Colors are only the light that is reflected back to you because the object is not absorbing that particular spectrum of light.
