Is it mean wanting to put my dog down after the way it killed a cat?

Ever since Feb, it's been having behavioral issues, acting too territorial, barks and growls at everyone that walks near my house and I have to end up putting a muzzle on him. I had to once get him back inside because he was trying to step outside. Plus he has tried dragging me during some walks and it's now taking the 3rd command to get him to stop pulling. He's a Presa Canario.

Then last week, I saw the way it killed a cat. Luckily it didn't belong to anyone. It was like I was watching some scene from a horror movie. He didn't obey my ''stop'' commands. I said it loud and clear. Nothing. I feel as if I can't control him anymore. Then I'm going to likely be responsible if something bad happens. So is it mean wanting to put him down after what he just did with the cat? I saw something in him that scared me. Either way, I feel as if I've failed him. I don't have no idea what went wrong. I've tried my best to provide care and love; never abused him.

You should probably take it to a specialized training school or look into better obedience training. It is a thing that violence can become a repeat behavior in canines, but if nothing else, then see if you can find somewhere that will take the dog in or work with it because making the decision to have it put down.

It sounds like you're unprepared to care for this dog in its current state, so the most responsible thing to do would be to get help or give it up.

I'll get it there. Hopefully his aggressive behavior changes and he becomes the former sweet self he used to be. He wasn't always like this.

That's strange. Wish I could help, but I have no idea why that would happen tbh. But if you don't succeed, see if you can get it re-homed to somewhere that can give retraining another go rather than put down immediately.

yeah you're right. If anything happens, I'm going to get in major trouble. I made a mistake in owning a big, powerful breed as a first time owner. He's my first dog I've ever owned.

You are a bad pet owner. You should learn about the animals behavior and what causes it prior to being a pet owner. You can't just get a pet and expect it to do everything you want it to.

I wish he was back to his sweet self again. He wasn't always like that. My mistake was not doing my research on Presa Canario and treating him with care and love like I would towards any other dog breed. I didn't realize he would be so much work.

It's just that I'm having a bad feeling that something bad can happen one day. It's like I have hunch about something. I have a feeling that he can try escaping again, cause issues and then cops are going to come knocking on my door or be forced to shoot him if he were to come charging at them.

I would try the school route, first and if they can't do anything with him, maybe he should go!
Can you have a vet check him out to see if he's unstable, or something?

You have a powerful dog breed and this is your first dog? Presas have prey drives; as do most dogs mine has a strong one and has decimated more than a few squirrels.


You need to rehome the dog to someone who is capable of handling a powerful breed like that. One that is an experienced owner. The dog is also likely very poorly bred because no reputable presa breeder would ever sell one to an inexperienced owner.

He's a Presa Canario aka Mastiff. I made a mistake in being a first time owner of that breed. He's acting too protective and territorial. This scares people.

That's what breed is like they are a guard dog and very protective if you haven't got him used to people and dogs and other animals at a pup he's going to be aggressive towards people and animals that's what they are known for, didn't the breeder warn you before buying him you did check on the parents too didn't you to get an idea if they breed for aggression or pets? you can't just own this type of breed and think you can be lazy about it, your to blame not the dog it's not like owning some little friendly breed you have to commit a lot of time into training when they're young so they don't become much more difficult older you should be going to dog training classes if you don't know what your doing because if that dog gets out and attacks someone for walking near your property it's your folt for not training him right. I'm used to rottweilers and such breeds so I would feel confident getting one as pup I don't know why you thought to get one like this as your first dog you could have gotten something similar like Staffordshire bull terrier they can be more manageable and really friendly with people, then get one of them after a year or too it's what you should have been told.

No, I didn't read much. I know it was a big dog and used for guarding purpose in the past. I just didn't think it was so much work.
