Has anyone worked for a company that gave you your birthday off as a "paid holiday"?

Several years ago, I worked for an electric utility company that gave the birthday off as a holiday. Actually, you could take any day off in the week of your birthday, most took Monday or Friday and made a long weekend of it.

It's actually a good idea, better than giving everyone the same holiday, because it keeps the majority of the employees on the job, rather than everyone disappearing on the same day.

At the last company I worked for, I spent Thanksgiving and Christmas doing all the boring small tasks that get looked over and forgotten for months in the rush of a busy day. I spent my birthday working a 16 shift 😂

Yeah. I took pride in it though. I was pleased with myself because the whole region caught wind of it was like "be like him"

I've never worked for a company that did that but I've always requested my birthday off and just taken it unpaid.

Nope. In the past a lot of companies used to have nice things for their employees but today 95% have been removed to save money. And the ones that remained are cheap empty gestures.

Yes, they've told me they used to give nice Christmas bonuses, with Christmas Eve and Christmas day off and a nice gift card for groceries on Thanksgiving. I wish it was still like that! I guess I can't complain too much, because I do have a job lol

Comanies used to compete for the best employees and treat them well after the second world war because there was so much to do, the workforce wasn't as plentyful because a lot of people died and back then people rarely switched jobs so if you didn't get the good people at the start you were stuck with them for their whole life. They believed it was part of good management how you handled your employees. Now they're just trying to rip people off, gaslight them and capitalize on peoples desperation to make them work for less than they're actually worth.

They do put you on a "probationary" period. It involves steps: 3 months, 6 months and then one year. If you're there after one year, in my department anyway, your pay increases substantially! I did pass it. However, some workers have said they do that to "use" people. They hire a bunch of people and pay very little but expect a lot, then just let them go and only keep the few they feel have a possible future. It increases production at a minimum cost but does weed out less than desirable workers. Is that common?

Yes. Or they do unpaid internships and only kids with rich parents can afford to even apply to those, and those are the internships that lead to the well paid jobs. We're at peak income and wealth inequality atm. Since world war 2 it has only gotten worse for about 30 years things got a lot more equal because the war shook everything up there were chances for new people to make money but now we've lived in relative stability for so long all the wealth has concentrated to few people. And usually only a war, a plague, a revolution things like that will reset the inequality a bit before it starts increasing again. We're in the worst phase of capitalism atm.

Every company I've ever worked for gave me my Birthday off, not that I gained anything by it. They gave EVERYONE that day off. New Year's Day!

When I was in college, I worked nights as a janitor and the full time employee's had a "floating" vacation day. It was pretty much what you describe.

They paid us for it, but i was one of very few who actually got my birthday off. Most people just got “double time” for part of their birthday shift. Ell oh ell!

Nope, I worked on my birthday in the restaurant and do half the day in my own business but the other half isn't paid
