From my science class, I knew the Sun was a moderately small star… Though never learned about the behemoth, UY Scuti.

Really impressive though that we live in such a time that not only do we learn new things about our universe, but we can express those things outright without being persecuted or thrown in house arrest for going against pre written texts of belief, the way Galileo was treated. Science has come along way especially in the field of Astronomy. Simply, ‘Wow!’

I know all the stars that are found till this day, there might be bigger who knows, each year or 2 we are breaking the records by finding stars that are bigger than the biggest star that we have found, plus every star has it's own color and characteristics!

You do know that bigger stars exists, since black holes are made from dead stars and our own star can't turn into a black hole because it's size doesn't have the specific requirements, the max it can turn into a red giant that's all and will swallow all the nearby planets including earth sadly!

Unbelievable! I have never heard of it before, but of course you need a huge telescope to see it. Makes you wonder how scientists can even measure something like that with any accuracy? To me is sounds like they drew straws. 😅😂

well, yes... they definitely start "measuring" based on conjectures, which is an idea of how big something should be... and then you try to measure bases on references to that, for example... the speed of light being mostly, a constant all across the Universe

I was also floored when an astro physicist suggested some or even most star constellations have been gone. That the stars have died and been replaced.

Many moons ago (see what I did there?) I was at a Sky Watch out in a late summer corn field in Kankakee. Those extra 4-5 orders of magnitude make a big difference- saw the Milky Way, per se. Had two of my astrophotos win first place in their categories. Everyone was into photo-manipulation and editing. Mine won in the "non-edited" categories for "sky objects" (the Moon, in my case) and "terrestrial" (just a sunset over said cornfields ). Best I saw way in Door County, WI, though. Too bad I didn't have my binos at the time. Cell reception is poor to non-existent there, too.

When I go out to the desert, where they have no city lights, I can see all kinds of things. Unfortunately, I am also under a flightpath so also see planes flying over, both ways, every couple of minutes, although they don't ruin my observations. I'll have to get me a telescope, maybe a Celestron, so I can see a lot more. But now that I think about it, they do have a stargazing group near by, as well as Giant Rock, where they used to gather to watch for UFOs and stargazing.

If you are only going to have ONE optical piece, I'd go for bigger objectives- the main light-gathering lenses- rather than the highest power of magnification. It's amazing what I can see through my 10x55 Celestron binoculars!!! Plus they are good for terrestrial spotting too. At the monthly Sky Watches in our area, Jeff and his buds bring their heavy duty optics!

What does a pair of Celestron bi-nocs run?

I did a quick search and found $116 to $186 range. I got mine years ago for $85, fully coated optics, and a diopter compensator on it. That way, if you wear glasses and know the diopter strength of your lenses, you can adjust the binos so you can watch more comfortably without your glasses by just dialing in your lens Rx. (Not sure if the ones today still have that feature). The groups leaders used to bring out an 18" reflector scope- about the size of a 40 gallon water heater!!! With all the solid-state imaging sensors now though, they are getting great images with eensie little mini-scopes now. Weird. Anyway, there are some knock-off brands, some better than others. Celestron was always good to me. I had a little scope until I got the bi-nocs, and then gave it to a kid who was interested but couldn't get a scope. But, even if you decide that you WILL be stepping up to a large-scale scope sooner or later, it's still nice to have bi-nocs in your bag for doing some preliminary spotting, if not most of your wider-angle viewing too. At the sky watches, the bi-nocs can be less intimidating for first-timers, rather than looking through something they have to climb a ladder to reach the eyepiece. ( We'd get lots of scout troops visiting for their Astronomy badges.)

I know that our sun (Sol) is a midget in the realm of astrophysics. I'm not sure I can comprehend just how large a star can be in the universe.

I did know that. And the biggest stars aren't even the biggest things in our universe. Some of the structures we can see in space make those giant stars look tiny by comparison.
