Today (26 August 2024) is National Dog Day in the US... yes, it's a fake holiday.

Are you a dog lover? Let's see how much GaG knows about dogs.

Below is a list of dog breeds. Can you name the country that each breed originated from?

1. Akita

1. Akita - Japan
2. Corgi - Wales
3. Great Dane - Germany
4. Rhodesian Ridgeback - Southern Africa, more specifically Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe
5. Samoyed - Russia
6. Dalmatian - Croatia

1. Akita – that’s an easy one… Japan.

2. Corgi – Oh definitely UK, (specifically, Wales). Queen Elizabeth LOVED them!

3. Great Dane – Believe it or not they come from Germany, NOT Denmark!

4. Rhodesian Ridgeback – Technically they're from Zimbabwe, But it used to be called Rhodesia. Named for Cecil Rhodes, who made the colonization of Africa possible, and created the Rhodes’ Scholarship.

5. Samoyed – I believe they're from Siberia.

6. Dalmatian – They are from the Dalmatia region of Croatia.

7. Pug – Again, this one is easy too, they are famously from China.

.1 Akita Japanese guard dog, a friend had one.
2. Corgi west wales, it means dwarf dog (possibly brought here by vikings) technically speaking the plural is corgwn
3. Great Dane. German dogs but oddly friendly with no plans of world domination.
4. Rhodesian Ridgeback I think the clues in the name here and its not rhode island. Nasty things apparently.
5. Samoyed never heard of it but guessing Samoa
6. Dalmatian from dalmatia but thats now Croatia for the time being
7. Pug. The vast amount of pug ornaments from China gives the game away. Plus I've a puggle

Probably more than a lot of people, at least about some breeds. I've had dogs all my life and trained them for hunting and field trial competitions. I like most dogs but I'm particularly fond of springer spaniels and cocker spaniels. I don't mean the Americanized versions of those breeds, which are completely different breeds, even though the AKC does not formally recognize that fact.

The first image below is what a real springer spaniel looks like, followed by a real cocker. They actually look very similar to each other except for their size, and very different than their Americanized counterparts. Cockers also come in a range of colors whereas springers are either liver and white or black and white.

Many years ago (200+ I think) they were actually the same breed. Hunters/breeder used the larger ones to hunt pheasants, grouse, ducks and hairs/rabbits. They were called springers because they sprung or flushed game rather than pointed it like some hunting breeds. The smallest ones in a litter were reserved for hunting woodcock (thus the name cocker), which are found in very dense bushes, and the smaller dogs were better able to get into the bushes and flush the woodcock. So there were often springers and cockers in the same litter. Today they are separate breeds, but very similar in looks and talents, and they are used interchangeably to hunt all the above game.

Sorry for the novel, and for not answering your question about countries of origin. I don't know the answers for most of them without looking them up. I'm just a big fan of springers and cockers, which both originally came from Great Britain, where the best stock still exists. There are a lot of really good springers and cockers in the US, but most of them are no more than a few generations removed from GB, and British stock is regularly brought to the US and Canada to keep the genes as pure as possible.

I hate dogs because of what they do to people. If you're a Christian you should know the Bible does not speak highly of dogs. In fact every time the word dog appears in the Bible it's always a negative or violent reference. And Jeremiah 15 God himself refers to dogs as destroyers. Dogs are a menace to society. Despite the LIE from hell that's been pushed that they are our best friend. But numbers don't lie. In the United States over 12,000 people are attacked by a dog everyday, totaling 4.5 million per year and the numbers keep climbing. Sebastian Caban only got to live on this planet for 3 days when the family dog attacked and killed him. As his parents had him and the dog on the bed the mother coughed it startled the dog and immediately attacked Sebastian. Another story a woman was babysitting a couples infant her family dog ripped baby out of her arms mauled it to death. That schmuck had to call the parents and say I'm sorry but my dog killed your baby today. An 88 year old woman was mauled to death by her dog that she thought loved her. These are just a few stories that are heartbreaking and gut-wrenching. Even though it happens so frequently the people keep saying the same thing they are in disbelief they can't believe it happened you don't believe it happens until it happens to you. So in summary FUK DOGS! And the people dumb enough to have them around their family!
