Why was the world so obsessed with Pamela Anderson in the 90s?

I watched the WWE 1995 Royal Rumble, and they made a big fuss about Pamela Anderson being the special guest host.

She didn't actually do anything; she just sat there and then, at the end, awkwardly stood in the ring, visibly uncomfortable and not knowing what was happening.

I've heard her referenced a lot as being a hot girl or the "heart throb" of the 90s, but I've never actually seen her in any form of media before other than articles and pictures.

Maybe this is before my time to properly understand, but why did everyone fret over her so much?

The 90s was big on the Fake Plastic Barbie (tm) look. The number of women getting breast implants exploded in the late 80s and early 90s, and they also started doing things like fillers, cheek implants, and other things around that time, and Hollywood *really* embraced that look and spread it everywhere. I never liked it myself (I've always been into all-natural girls) but it can't be denied that it was the in thing.

Pam Anderson hit that popularity wave just right, starting out on Home Improvement before moving to Baywatch (and getting her first set of huge implants), where she literally became famous worldwide (Baywatch was broadcast in over 150 countries, and was the most popular show on TV for years). She also married Tommy Lee (drummer for Motley Crue), and you know how Hollywood and the gossip magazines love celebrity marriages, especially trashy ones with lots of drama. They reported on everything and people (mostly women) ate it up.

Fortunately, the 2000s brought back the "all natural" look, and Pam's time in the spotlight was largely over - Fake Plastic Barbies were put out to pasture.

Baywatch was an incredibly popular show that helped kickstart Pamela’s acting career after her time as a Playboy Bunny. She also made a lot of appearances on some 90’s sitcoms since she was pretty much the epitome of the ideal “hot blonde” of that era. She got famous for being hot and had a good agent that kept her in the press so she could make tons of money with her image. The 90’s and early 00’s were probably the peak of her post-playboy fame.
