When I was at work my friend was like you should buy a 50 inch tv and that my rca hdtv is small at 31.5/32 inches and that hdtv is old tech do I care?

If It’s Not Broken Don’t Fix It & if your current tv works keep using it. The Sony television on my wall in my bedroom is 17 years old & if it stops working I’ll buy a new one & the same thing goes for the 7 year old Sony television on my living room wall.
My tv is only 12 years old though
Dude if it still works keep it & I’m doing the same.
If you're happy with your TVs size, then no need to upgrade to a larger size. HD is old technology, but it still a really good format. As someone with a 4k TV, the difference between HD and 4k is nowhere near the difference between SD and HD, often times it's hard to tell the difference between HD and 4k unless you're up close.
I get it. It's just a tv. If it's still working no need to replace

If you're happy with it, I wouldn't care what others think. I have a 32" model that's only 720p. It's fine for me, for now.
What about what he said?
If you have high speed internet at home you could get a smart TV that can download all sorts of free content. Possibly enough that may allow you to cancel cable/satellite if you have it. Upgrading to a BluRay player would take advantage of a 4K TV. I can't comment on gaming. Adding surround sound can enhance the viewing experience (and possibly gaming), but that could probably be done with your existing TV. It all depends on where your interests lie and how much you want to spend.
if you're happy with your tv why do you give a fuck what your coworker thinks about it?
Stuff does not make you a better person.
