Where does 'directional' even come from? I know what it means, but what part of the country is it from?

Turn signal. . . but directional signal is also correct.
Turn signal, or simply "blinker".
Usually as in this exasperated statement/question, "Use your darned blinker, would ya?"
I've heard and seen the terms directional and indicator, of course, but they're not very good tongue roller-offers to my way of thinking and speaking.
Turn signal or blinkers.
The only place I ever heard them referred to as “directional turn signals” was in the Army National Guard.

I do say directionals... and that's because in Spanish, that's just how you call them... "direccionales" so, it might be possible that it comes from the border states?
Here in Belgium I never heard "directional" or "turn signal", rather "clignotants" (French) or "pinkers" (Flemish)... ;0)
I say blinker or indicator sometimes. I feel like blinker comes from my older family members that I grew up witb. That's what they called it. That said, I remember it being called turn signal officially in Drivers Ed.
I say turn signal, but I would understand what the person who sais "directional." meant. Just like I call it "soda" but if someone says "pop" in the context I know what he means.
