Are you more of a "fix it yourself" or "call an expert" kind of person?

I'm a fix it myself, guy unless it is something out of my knowledge, tools, and skill level.
We live in a disposable mindset society of consumerism, and currently people are having fight for their right to repair. Companies try nasty tactics (especially with smart products) to keep you from repairing your own devices, just to make you buy new ones. During the 90s its was Nintendo with specialized screws for their cartridges, nowadays smart devices will brick your entire device, if it detects you tampering with it.
Always learn to fix & maintain what you buy, it will last way longer.
When it comes to "call an expert" that is when you can't understand education videos and you don't have the tools to do it.
Easiest things to repair, are fabrics. Learn to sew, it is a needed knowledge. Learning rope knots & hitches is super important too.

Depends on what it is, and how long it would take me to fix it vs what it will cost to have someone else do it. Right now I am waiting for a handyman to come over and install a second bidet in another bathroom in my house, fix some under-cabinet lights, and replace the icemaker in my refrigerator. I can do these things myself but he is faster and more skilled than I am and charges very fairly. My time is quite valuable and I do no want to use it doing things that someone else can do better, faster, and cheaper.

I actually just bought a TON of DIY books at a couple thrift stores, so I’m looking to become a little more handy and be able to do at least minor jobs myself, if not the medium-difficulty stuff. Probably would leave real advanced stuff to the pros, but that’s kind of the point of the books, to gauge what I can/can’t do and will/won’t do.

Anything involving heights though😱…. I'm bringing in a pro😅😝

Depends what we're talking about. In general, the older I get the less and less I trust, "experts". There really are no wise old men. And few people who want to do a job like they'd be willing to put their name on it.

Having said that, there are some things I know how to do that I just don't want to do anymore. Take changing my brakes on my car. I've changed many brakes over the years, I know how to do easy enough. But iit's still much easier now for me to make the money to pay someone else to do it now. So really it's just me weighing whether the guy I'm trying pay to do it is smart enough or honorable enough to do a serviceable job.

Until the last several months, after my cardiac arrest/heart attack episodes, my entire life was composed of my fixing things myself.

For the first time in my life, in the last few months, I was too weak to do two fairly major repairs in my home, so I had to pay someone to do them for me.

The first one cost me $2000.00 instead of $20.00 if I'd been able to do it myself.
The second was $2500.00 instead of $30.00.

It's expensive to get old and ill.
