Is showing up unannounced to someone's door something rude to do now?

Question

I remember times when people would just knock on each other's doors and then people would be surprised when they see who was at their door, it seems now it's just an insane thing to do, no body just shows up at people's doors anymore, it's now a courtesy to call or contact a person first before knocking on their door, does anyone still just go around knocking on people's doors without letting them know? 🤔

Culturally? One of the many byproducts of individualism, it is logically significant in individualistic cultures, and it is contagious. Because cultures are contagious, at least those powerful enough. Individually? Fortunately, individuals may escape cultural dominance, case-by-case basis.  I see the good thing, ideally, about this possibility  of showing up unannounced OR having someone showing up announced at my door. In practice, it remains difficult and I expect people to be allergic to that, by default, since a long time already. Since forever in fact, I have been raised to consider it a rude behavior.

I think ghe majority of people would find that weird.

That said, I will 100% have an "open house" rule for my closest friends and they can come knocking anytime. If I'm there, ill let them in no matter what I'm doing.

Also, I am VERY picky as to who gets to be in that circle and anyone who tells someone my address, gives my number to someone, or tells someone about my open house rule without asking me first will immediately be off that list and probably fade into the background permanently.

my friends see it as " normal "... and as some of them had spare keys to my previous apartment, they just came without even calling me :D so... I'm used to it... and I don't see it as rude... because I love my friends :D

For me, no. I don't consider it rude, in fact if you are family or a friend, you are always welcome in my place no matter what and for however long you want/need. My door is always open for family and friends.

Where I live, the neighbors don't even talk to each other, much less knock on doors. People are all socially awkward now and want isolation. When I was growing up, my neighbors were all at each other's houses nearly every day and night. Adults and kids both. We showed up unannounced and hung out constantly. It was like a giant family. Now, it's the exact opposite. It's sad af.

For me, it really depends on the relationship I have with the person. Some of my friends, it’s not an issue (just don't expect me to be a good host). Others, I’d be pretty pissed.

I mostly to call since we all have a phone.
It’s just being polite… that includes my own mom’s place. Even though she is expecting me on a weekly basis … I always say I’m on my way and ask if she wants/needs something.
