Do you do anything special to remember a loved one who's passed?

It's creeping up on the anniversary of my dad's death. Being so close to the holiday season it makes it that much harder to cope with. This is the first year I won't be in the same country and I won't be visiting his grave and favourite places. That was my tradition over the last few years, I'll be going back for Christmas but probably won't get the opportunity to travel up north to those spots. I want to do something but I'm at a loss on what feels right.

I've never done anything special. Just a lot of memories that have not diminished even after 20+ years for my mom, and almost 20 years for my dad.

I rarely go to the grave. I know some people do. Some people talk to their loved ones. But for me, I never had much to do there. I stare at the grave for a few minutes then leave. It's local, but I only go about once every 3-5 years now. The last time I went it really hit me how old the marker itself looked. For some reason that bothered me, maybe because it was a visual sign of how long it's been.

For father had a major stroke just after Thanksgiving. He was in ICU during Christmas. Then died on New Year's Day. I found him dead when I went to watch traditional New Years Day football with him.

I mention that because it has never ruined the holidays. I don't really think about it any more on holidays than on any other day. Memories come on a very regular basis still, but not on any special day. Although I did acknowledge what would have been my father's 100th birthday. My mother's 100th birthday would be this coming year.

Basically it's all internalized. So I don't do anything special.

My mom died six years ago. We have her ashes in an urn on the mantle in my living room. I thought I’d think it was creepy but I actually like it. I kiss it everyday when I leave and return. Feels a little more like she’s still with me. We also have a specific light switch that turns on a light that shines on the mantle, and I turn it on everyday.

I buy flowers that I put on a stand in front of the mantle, on Mothers’ Day, the anniversary of her death, and her birthday. Sometimes I’ll just take the urn down and hold it in my lap on the couch for a bit. But for the flowers, she loved sunflowers, so I buy those when possible. She also loved lilies, so I get them if sunflowers aren’t in season.

Yep I do candle lights, the best thing about candle lights is you can do it anywhere, get some candles, a picture of the person and get it framed, then go to any spot you think they would like and light up your candles by the picture, it's like a little memorial every year in their memory, since you aren't home, the importance is symbolizing that they aren't forgotten and at the end of the day it's better than doing nothing right.

Even if you didn't do anything the memories live within you so that's actually the importance, just spread his memory to your kids

I used to make them laugh forever... and to mostly, have a good and great time

so, this is something I always try to do with/and for the people in my life

was also a promise to them, that I would live my life the best I can and to make it also that, for the others in my life

Anything special, I don't ritualize this no, but I spread their memories here and there, throughout my life, through meeting people, through conversing. Without schedule, nor intents, it just happens.

This week was the first anniversary of the death of my best friend. We were friends for over 50 years. I just thought about all the times he helped me over the years. I would have given him a kidney.

The tradition is one thing but as long as you remember the memories then you honor him and his life. Prepare his favorite meal and think about him as you eat it.
