When a loved one dies an untimely death, does it make it harder to cherish the happy memories you had with them?

It's said that while grief fades, happy memories last forever. But my dad said it's hard for him to look back at the memories of my mother (she died when she was 30 and I was 2) it's hard for him to cherish the memories of her because she passed when she was so young. While he lost loved ones before, they were elderly and lived a full life so there end wasn't so tragic.

Also, she died in a car accident so it was quite sudden, and I can only imagine the shock he experienced. She actually died in his arms T_T
