What do you think is the most notable (i. e.-most well-known) human-built structure in your country? Please don't let the picture bias you.

It will be interesting to see if people from the same country identify the same structure, or different structures.

I think most people would pick one of the many over-photographed castles simply because of their impossing nature and historical significance.

But I think other contenders would be
3rd place
Eglwys Sant Illtud (St Illtud's Church) a 13th century Church built upon the site of a 500AD monastic university, notable for being Britain's oldest seat of learning and considered the cradle of Christianity.

2nd place
Pentre Ifan

A 16ft 16 tonne stone balanced on the points of three 8ft stones. Built around 3500BC probably for a laugh. Not particularly unique, there's plenty of others here and in Europe but I like this one. I think these things are notable as they show the learning curve that led to stonehenge and a connectivity of tribes across Europe and debunk the 'aliens did it' stuff.

1st place
Portmeirion. An italian village built purely as a folly for one mans amusement and nothing more. Of little historical, religious, or cultural significance, and now just a tourist attraction I think it earns a notable inclusion for it's sheer pointlessness and as a reminder to not take life too seriously.

The little mermaid is well known statue that has gone through some shit - it's a national treasure and highly disappointing to see.

Hallgrímskirkja is probably the most known structure from my native country. But now nothing from my country is well known.

@potteplante I visited Denmark a few years ago and saw the Little Mermaid. I agree it is a bit underwhelming, smaller than most expect, but it's nice. The place I remember the most during my visit, though, was Amalienborg, the royal palace. Very nice architecture.

I know both. But the church I don't know the name, and there's no way I can remember that. I think you're right. Iceland is known more for its nature than it's architecture.

I saw a replica in Solvang. I heard the original is tiny. I didn't make it to the original, because we only got to see the city due to a missed connection. I wanted to take a taxi, but the lady at the airport convinced us to take the train, which stops quite a ways from Nyhavn and we got so lost. 😂 We still saw Tivoli, the City Hall, Church of the Holy Spirit, the world's longest pedestrian street and Nyhavn, but didn't get to see any of the other iconic sites.

Do not try to replicate our divinity, or we will poison your culture, in every fields you own. We do not have oil, but we have ideas.

Please do not confuse the Baguette with a braguette though.

I'm from Poland. I don't know if there is any landmark here that foreigners know. And the only one that comes to my mind was built by Germans and probably is not the good representative.
