A lot of people know that San Francisco isn't a good place to live anymore so would you please take a look at how it was at one time?

I lived in San Francisco during the time this song was made and everything in this video is very familiar to me.
I was there with all the hippies in the Haight Ashbury district - where that park is and grew up with those loving, peaceful people. It shaped who I am even to this day.
I drove that freeway they show in the beginning of the video and I drove on the orange Golden Gate Bridge when I was 16 and just got my driver's license.🙂
The other bridge you see in the video I rode the bus 🚌 everyday on that bridge to get to work. I did that for 4 years.
I got to know the other passengers on the bus so we'll that when I was pregnant they gave me a baby shower right there on the bus. How cool is that?

That's my generation, too, and those were my people, although I was in the Los Angeles area.
My friends and I had some great times in San Francisco during the 70s when I was in my late teens and twenties. It seemed like a magical place back then.

I had wonderful experiences there with a girlfriend in the mid-90s. The hippie thing had faded, but that iconic city was still clean and beautiful.

My wife and I moved to northern California in 2002 and took many trips to San Fran over the next 10+ years. It was still wonderful. We would sometimes take the ferry from Vallejo. We toured Alcatraz. We went to Sausalito. She had some friends who lived there.
Fisherman's Warf, Pier 39, the Ferry Building Market Place, Ghirardelli Square, Chinatown, the cable cars, pedicabs, Palace of Fine Arts, Golden Gate Park, Victorian homes, and all the other classic city attractions were still beautiful, although it was much more crowded with tourists.
We went there for Fleet Week one time and watched the Blue Angels fly around the bay and between sky scrapers.

But I understand that the city has gone down hill. Crime, homelessness, filth.
I haven't been there for years and wonder if it has lost its magic.

Anyway, I'm still nostalgic for the days that the song memorialized. It was a great time to be alive.

You mentioned some places that I worked at and visited a lot.
I worked in the Ferry Building when I was 18. I worked for the Bank of America there. It was very far from the sunset district where I lived. And it wasn't the safest neighborhood for an 18 year old girl wearing a very very short mini skirt. 😉
Saucilito was a place I went to often. Nice stores and restaurants. Expensive though and uppity people lived there. But I was lucky enough to go out in a boat with my friend and her father and her sister and her friend that day. I had my first young lady drink on that boat ride - a Shirley Temple. No liquor in it.

You were more of a tourist than I was because I was either in school or at work and didn't have time to do the tourist thing. Except Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 which was built on year's later because it wasn't there when I used to go in 1965-67.

Of course Golden Gate Park was a hop skip and a jump from where I lived. You're talking about my old stomping grounds hehe...
My friend Patty and I actually hopped off the cable car one day and ran down Lombard Street - the crookedest street in the world. But the hike back up was exhausting!! But not everyone can say they did that - right?

@sage2021. My experiences of San Fran were only as a wide-eyed tourist.

I did see Pier39 totally grow over the years. It's like an amusement park now.
My first time to the Ferry Building was maybe 10 or 15 years ago, after it had been renovated.

It means to me because mamacita was born there and had lived her life there, not only she wore flowers on her head back then but she was one of the most beautiful flowers herself ☺️

I was there like 28 years ago and I liked it. But I couldn't understand what living there would be like and I don't know what it's like now :) But it was a nice experience. My godmother and her family lived there all of my life but now she moved back to Switzerland maybe it has to do with what you're talking about.

It's a good song about a time and city that have been lost to history. San Francisco today is a city in crisis, politically, socially and economically, with a multi-million dollar skyscraper that might fall over. Sad!

It was released in 1968 around the time Bobby Kennedy was assigned. I remember a bunch of us from junior high school went to church all together and prayed.

You can go to just about any inner city and see people riding uppers and downers. George Floyd for example was doing meth to go up and doing heroin and fentanyl to go down. He was so "loving" that he put a pistol to the stomach of his pregnant ex girlfriend...

That's what 60's hippie culture was. They took speed (amphetamines) to go up and dance until they dropped and then they barbiturates and heroin to go down. Obviously they took a number of hallucinogens like LSD and smoked weed, but that stuff doesn't put you on the street fucked out of your mind like a dope fiend.
