Because it's usually easier, tempting and more comfortable to assume rather than examine any topic?
Well, it’s just kind of the health requirements for each animal and how well it USED to or mostly aligned with the daily lives and mannerisms of each gender.
Dogs hunted in packs (descended from wolves) and are more likely to be aggressive and they can run for quite some time. They have certain endurances and this tolerance for messy situations. This kind of variety worked well with guys say who would be more active/consistently active, into rough play, and into any kind of messy outdoor activity/sport. Dogs can be highly driven, but it’s not to say that cats can’t perform this way either. It’s just I suppose no one has ever really tried. Dogs are food motivated so this can help with their drive and such. Dogs have more of a mentality to please their owners. Not always- depends on breed, genetics, bond/relationship between pet and animal.
Now on the other side of the coin cats have a big big trait which consists of self cleaning. Grooming, whatever you want to call it. They’re less vocal but it’s not uncommon. We’ve all seen cats fighting purring and such, but usually cats like to take silent approaches especially when hunting. Etc etc. even marking territories is done with the nonverbal/non-vocal pheromones they spray onto trees or other.
Cats also tend to be more physically expressive with their “pack members” if they had/have one, their mate, or litters. Especially if they bonded well with an owner. Due to their typical resort to silence, expressive nature, and desire to keep clean, they get along better with females who also stay indoors like to be affectionate, like peace and quiet, and etc. Cats do a lot better than dogs indoors and due to their size they can get enough exercise with what’s known as the “zoomies” indoors as well. A lot of cats aren’t enthused with water, mud, etc. so would they love water sports? Mud sports? Or any activity dealing with such? Cats can be stealthy, aggressive, and much more but they prefer a quiet life and usually have a more docile nature. Sometimes they even prefer solitude. These combinations of things is why they get along with females. Dogs are the perfect wingman USUALLY so with that said they don’t mind a day at the beach, a long hike, and on and on.
Dogs are usually used for hunting etc. could cats be used for hunting? Sure. Have cats been walked out on leashes or let out and trusted to come back home soon after? Yes. But I suppose that’s just the way our links with pets have developed and unfolded. There’s exceptions to these “unwritten rules.” And the rules are not final. There’s cars that love water and dogs that love solitude. There’s guys who prefer to be home bodies and can get along well with a house cat. There’s ladies who prefer to be active and feel safer with dogs. It’s just however people prefer it. Sometimes a person may prefer neither and simply go with a parrot.
wherever floats your boat! :]
I rushed to type this so if it helps, it helps, if it didn’t, it didn’t 😂
Hope it made some sense. Best to ya!

I don’t get it, people love to associate gender with random things.
I think one reason why men typically go for dogs over cats is because dogs are easier to control. You’re the dogs master and men like to be dominant and in charge. While cats see themselves as in charge and pretty much own you lol
It's a stereotype. A lot of women own small dogs, too. I used to own a large dog that I trained from a puppy. He was a great dog and had a fantastic personality; friendly, loved to learn and excellent with kids. I was his "master" and he would do anything I asked, including not touch a steak on a low table, no matter how long it sat there and no matter how long I was out of the room. He died at 13. I haven't gotten another dog because I don't have time to train and work out a dog properly right now, but someday I'd love another one. Great memories. :)
A man who just owns cat (s) is going to judged much more harshly then a woman with just owns dog (s).
If I lived out in the country I wouldn’t mind having a tame bobcat or even a mountain lion (I know people who have done this). You can’t domesticate those wild animals but they can be (carefully) tamed. I’ve known people who’ve done it. As long as they have plenty of open space and aren’t doing something stupid (like having the big cat around kids) I don’t see a problem with it.
Big cats are not at all “feminine”. They’re vicious and amazing predators. Amazing to watch their agility and hunting ability. A mountain lion has a vertical leap of up to 14 ft which is very incredible.
Okay sure they’re not feminine but they’re not masculine either. They’re either predator or prey. In the food pyramid and they prefer and get along as they do and what they want.
Although to be fair I also think I could associate both masculine and feminine traits with such creatures. But I think I’m just gonna let them be.
There’s also male and female animals of each wild species and the females aren’t “masculine” they all do what they just do….
They and we have our hormones and have are basic needs for survival. Each one has will power and will either do or not do what they need to survive.
I’ve seen male cowards. I’ve seen empathetic men. I’ve seen courageous women. I’ve seen cowardice females. The charts go both ways. All I have to say is no… you can’t take animals they’re not masculine and nothing like you. They’re their own beautiful/ majestic thing.
Moving on without reading any reply you may type or even not type. ✌️
@Rosexøxø just FYI I neither own dogs nor cats.
But men who have “feminine” traits really are judged much more harshly than women who have masculine. Even if it’s supposedly more “acceptable” in society it’s really not.
I am not stating that as a complaint or something. I’m just stating that as a fact. Don’t expect that to change nor do I expect it (or even want it) to change.
But one thing that needs change is women could have more respect for men have to deal with and when they have to go through. Acting stoic and tough when you don’t feel like it is much easier said then done.
What's interesting is when I play a game of 20 questions occasionally with people, I've noticed when I ask the question "If you could be reborn as any animal other than human, what would it be and why?" most women answer with cat. Just to clarify, I always ask wild or domesticated? And they always say domesticated. And I think it has to do with the fact that women want to have freedom to do what they want, but also be pampered. I think cats are also usually seen as clean, elegant, and attractive (usually). Everything a woman wants to be associated with. They do come across as more feminine by human standards as well in comparison to dogs.
I'm unsure if there's a true correlation, but I have my suspicions that there's definitely a relation.
A good question. I question why do people seem to have to distinguish people into being a dog or cat person. I like any social animal but once you scrub out dogs and cats there aren't many species left.
I think it is that people see more masculine qualities in dogs and more feminine qualities in cats. After all pussy is colloquialism for female genitalia.
I have a cat or rather sadly had as he has passed. I think it is unfair to have dogs in an apartment especially herding breeds. My next companion pet will most likely be a cat. Cats like to roam too but I think adapt better to the confines of apartment living.
It takes a lot more social skills to build a relationship with a cat and I like a challenge.
Probably because men own dogs more often than cats and women own cats more often than dogs. That's an indication that there is a natural attraction to one or the other.
Dogs and cats have distinctly different instinctive personalities.
Dogs are more relatable to men. They are bigger, stronger, more aggressive, more emotionally stable and always horny like men. And they are loyal and obedient, traits that make men feel masculine.
Cats are smaller, weaker, moodier, more fuzy wuzy, more finicky and demanding and more aloof, feminine traits women relate to better.
I think it's because they see the genders in these animals. Dogs have more of a male nature and cats have more of a female nature, hence the term "catty" when referring to childish female behavior, or when people call men dogs for doing base things.
Both of these animals do mirror some male and female traits, but not sure men always prefer dogs and vice versa.
I'm male , I prefer cats , and for good reason , I love dogs too , but cats are easier and you can't really control a cat , dogs on the other hand are simple. Why do they assume? hmm , no idea , stupid stereotype I guess , certainly.
Also easier to place the cat when I have to go back Australia for a trip.
One thing I can't believe is moronic expats , coming here to live , and bringing a dam dog , exactly what the country does not need - Your dam dog !
Honestly? Stereotypes. Gender stereotypes. That's all there is to it, really. How it came to be I dunno. Maybe cuz dogs are usually bigger than cats, and bigger equals more masculine while smaller equals more feminine? But regardless of how it came to be, it's just a stereotype all the way.
Because dog big nice cat small mean? Sexism, basically. Cats are just as nice as dogs and dogs can be just as small as cats—and surprise surprise the assumption changes when the dog is small and mean.
It was never about pets it's just gender stereotypes again.
(I admit I'm biased because I prefer cats, but for real people have explicitly said things like women should not own big or male dogs specifically, because it's masculine somehow. Some men have had their masculinity questioned for liking kittens (small "mean") but obviously not for liking big cats like tigers. It's all B. S.)
Not to mention race stereotypes.
@beefcakebradybatson oh, for sure. It's all connected.
I prefer dogs to cats I'm. a women I prefer dogs I get really close with dogs and there much more fun playing ball with and stuff jump about nuts with
I prefer cats, because they are great company when you come from work, not only that at least you don’t take them for a walk. My boyfriend has got a cockapoo.
This Cat lady has a cat 💕
Cats ignore people, so you like being ignored.
People are so a lot of things only that people with cats are weird or negative things some and then there’s a whole entire population that loves both of them like me, cats and dogs
A dog is called man's best friend for a reason.
I'm not too sure, but I personally feel more comfortable around cats rather than dogs.
It's probably more common on average, so people just generalize.
I prefer both, love both and have both... cats and doggo
I looovvveee golden retriever but I don’t think I love enough to clean after him. 💩
Who assumes this? Where are you getting your information, the bin?
Not sure this is true. Most of the women I know love dogs!
Because a lot of the time that is the case. But definitely not always.
Apparently a man with a cat is an ick. *shrugs*
i think cause people assume that everyone gets along better with an animal closer to their very own character.
I dunno, given a choice between the two, I'll always pick cats.
The word "Pussy" comes to mind. Girls have them
Probably because the majority do , but there are exceptions
Actually most of the men I’ve known with pets have cats and I’ve only had dogs.
There are guys who love cats and girls who love dogs
It seems to be a generalization that is often true.
I have no idea, I actually prefer rabbits and parrots.
We just like to assume people don’t have a mental illness at first until they confirm it.
No idea. I like both.
I prefer dogs so it's kinda false
I love them both, but prefer dogs
Because for most people it's true.
I prefer dogs. And I hope she does too
I prefer neither. 🤣
Because guys like bitches?
I prefer both equally
Because a woman has a p***y !!!
I prefer dogs
Because wimenbare as ridiculous as cats
