The reason I ask is because no matter how much I try to avoid eye contact, shut down attempts to start conversations, and generally avoid interacting, it does not seem to deter women from hitting on me. Single women, married women, younger women.

People will use you, it could be for anything. Setting bounce is important and knowing who you are and what you want goes a long way. People will take advantage if you let them. It always starts with family and close friends. It’s okay to say no and inform people what you’re willing and not willing to do.
