Well if I were lay claim to any organized spiritual institution it wpould likely be furgr east Daoism & Buddhism seem to make sense to me, I think if the church had sided with Thomas the Gnotic or others from the desert Christian idea. But, as usual, my candidate did not have the connections so Iraneus became the inheritor of Christ's ( not Jesus's ) mantle & he was smart enough to be wired into the powers that be in Rome, far away in distance, ideas, self-service. Iraneus insisted that humans cannot have a direct or personal relationship with their god. If that were the case, who needs cardinals, bishops, arch-bishops, priests, and the same in other traditions though perhaps known under another name.
The Gnostic's asserted that humans can experience god directly without the bureaucracy. Again, this eliminates a lot of cushy positions and power cliques. You can tell that the Catholic church is patriarchal without knwing the rules for anyposition they are in. Patriarchal institutions are easy to identify because the 1st order of business is to make up rules and assign bossy positions. You can't have nearly as much "us" vs. "them" without having someone you can exclude or at least punish for breaking rules. I wish I know more about martiarchal institutions to see id the same need to have n us/them, follow all rules mindset. I'm sure there is but I doubt that it's as fundamental as you see it in many patriarchies.
