Do you address people by their first or last name?

I'm talking to a friend about former teachers/professors and he consistently refers to them by their last name and it's so odd to me. I can't think of an instance where I'd call or refer to someone by their last name.

It depends on the person and the situation. I most often call someone older than me by their last name along with Mr./Mrs./Miss/Ms. Younger people usually by their first name. In school a few friends called each other by their last names and that trend continued into adulthood.

I'd honestly be weirded out if someone called me by my last name and I'm used to be called a lot of things. 😅

I'm okay with it. Some of them twist it around to be funny. It's all good fun and better than nasty names.

It shows professional respect to call people with higher degrees by their title and last name.

Where I'm from we've a very informal hierarchy. Never have I referred to someone with a higher degree than me by their title and last name.

Even in professional settings where peasant me has been dealing with doctors and whatnot.

My best friend calls me by my last name. For me it depends on the person. If I use their last name, it's likely because I know them as such or more of a epithet.
